Digging up plants for the winter

I need to dig up a 5 foot basjoo and a couple of smaller ones. How many of the roots do I need to dig up with the corm for them to keep growing indoors during the upcoming winter?

Make sure they have as much root as possible.

Commercial growers of edible bananas often trim off all the roots on suckers before planting them. They regrow them quickly if conditions are good (warm and moist). Don't sweat it too much.

Look at the pot you are transplanting into (10 gal minimum, 25 would be better). Dig a hole the same size around the banana; remove plant. Insert roots/soil into pot. Completion.

If your soil is not well draining I'd mix up some and leave all the other dirt where your banana was. Depending on the size of the plant I'd say go 20-25 gal. a small pup maybe in a 15 gal. pot but that's a short term fix. :^)

Hi Sib,

to answer your question: You do not need to leave any roots on them. As long as you have
a sound corm, you have a banana plant. However the more roots you can leave on them,
the better and the less you disturb these roots, the better yet!

This brings me to another suggestion: Why do you not leave them where they are? You do
not state, where you live or in which HZ, but if it is 6 or better, you may benefit from my
experience with leaving Basjoos out all winter and saving yourself a bundle of work.

In my case still attached small pups were completely unaffected by the frost, probably,
because they were buried deeply enough in the mulch.

PS: I am even considering leaving one out all winter completely unprotected as an

PS to my previous post:

If you have to dig them out, follow Bryan's (LilRaverBoi's) advice. If you can do that while keeping the
root ball together, that will ensure minimal disturbance of the roots.
