Default Do these not have viable seed?

I am keen to grow different bananas for fruit (in general) but not plantains. Of all the exotics marketed as pups only, am I right in assuming that viable seed is not available?

Looking at Misi Luki, Mysore,Orinoco, Popoulu, Rojapuri, Thousand Finger, Cuban Red, Ele Ele,Ice Cream (Blue Java),Iholene Red.

No edible bananas have seeds. If you want to grow edible varieties your only choice is to get a pup or a tissue cultured plant.

Thanks for the info Gabe - that is what I guessed to be the case, but being new to these things - I just wanted to check with the experts. Well, being located where I am, I will just have to make do with what I can scrounge on the island here, and be consumed with envy when I read reports of the ones I can't get. lol

This is what prompted my query (sorry about the out of focus). This is a cavendish type I think and a great eater. The seeds turned out to be little more than soft papery marks, but they raised my expectations.

Cassie, I have never seen these before. Did you ever get an I.D. on them?

No - it only happened the once on just a couple of fingers. There was no apparent seed - more of a papery mark. Strange that they split when still so green.

Interesting-I wonder what they are?
Hope you're ok. Looks like Hannah may stay north of you with any luck.

Thanks Scott - those nanas were dwarf cavendish (or similar) and haven't done that since. I was new to bananas then and surprised at what I thought were seeds. (still surprised but realised that there was no substance to them as I think banana seeds are quite substantial.)

Luckily I think you are well out of the way - be a bad hurricane to reach you! haha!

Yes - we are the meat in the sandwich between Hanna and Gustav - but both heading away from us atm. A busy storm season for sure. Who knows about the next 2 heading off the African coast - at least it's not boring!!
