Eating the banana's heart!
Hi all,
I have a Philipino friend who when she discovered that I have a flowering banana palm started begging for the heart when it had finished flowering. I assumed that the heart was the central part of the flowering stalk and thought she would have to wait until it was cut down to get at it. I saw her again last week and she explained what the banana heart is. When the flower spike has finished producing bananas (female flowers) it carries on growing and forms a purple heart shaped 'bulb' on the end of the flower stalk. THIS was what may friend was referring to, DUH. I took it into work for her yesterday and she was overjoyed she says the tough bracts are peeled off until you can break the stalk easily by hand (i.e. tender section). This is then boiled but I'm not sure what happens next! If anyone is truly interested I can find out for them. Just ANOTHER use for bananas!!! |

Re: Eating the banana's heart!
I am a Filipino and I truly believe your friend will be happy to have your banana heart. The banana heart is hard to come by and she swill use that as a special ingredients for her kari-kari a special dish that go along very well with rice. It is not boiled but fried first together with eggplant, bitter melon, long beans, etc... and believe it or not peanut butter and toasted ground peanuts.
