Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
Yes it is... The pseudostem has a shiny (not waxy) appearance. The fruit color is light green yellow when ripe and is great for cooking (green), thick chips (green), fried (ripe), Marmalade (very ripe). An alternative to replace the traditional "Cuerno" plantain. Its resistance to Black Sigotoka, high yields and excellent quality have made it a popular fruit that may be consumed fresh or processed. This variety is currently being grown by many small farmers and co-ops throughout Honduras with excellent results. Under similar conditions FHIA-21's yield may surpass the traditional Cuerno plantain variety by two or three times. By employing modern scientific production methods, this fruit may be profitably exported to international markets. At the present time there are commercial plantations growing this variety in Honduras, Nicaragua and Ecuador.. AAAB 10-12'.. :^)

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
As soon as I find green ones. So far, only ripe ones, so I've cooked them as sweet not savory.
I would not have been able to leave it behind, all unwanted and alone. I would name it Pepe. |

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
, It did not make it, I believe I planted that F-21 In The Winter..
Bad Timing , Everything else in my garden looks great , 3 Namwahs and 1 Oronoco with Fruit, I just don't like the taste of Oronoco as Plantains.. Now I have a 12X8 Green House where I can get a head start in the growing season. Thanks Ed.. |

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
Sorry to hear about the 21, but at least your Giant Plantain and African Rhino Horn look great. How was the fruit?
When you started collecting all the different plantains I was curious how they would do in your area. Whatever you're doing seems to be working, Congrats... Quote:

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
I've got plenty of extra FHIA 21, But if you don't like the taste of the Banana as plantain.., you probably should get a plantain.
Do you have any of the red plantains?

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
No , We Love Desert Banana's & I We Love Plantains ! I can eat tostones all day long !
What I didn't enjoy was the taste of the Oronoco when prepared are Tostones, I don't think Oronoco Is a true Plantain, Just like you folks said its a great cooking banana to boil & eat with a lil olive oil , and salad.. So my family & I figured we got desert bananas to fruit all we need is 1 or 2 true plantains & we are set ... Never seen a Red Plantain .. Right Now we have : Oronoco -2 Namwah -3 with Fruit 3640-2 with pups Mona Lisa - 2 Grow Michel - 2 Gold Finger -2 Raja- Pure -1 ( I think Dan Told Me he got the mother plant From You Keith ). I would like to round it out with 1Or 2 F-21 & we even out the Bananas. I have lots of Avocado & Mangos.. Please let me know if you can spare 1 or 2 F-21 Pups it will be greatly appreciated.. Can send Money Via PayPal , Money Order or whatever method you request.. Thanks again Ed. P.s. I been Feeding My Bananas 0-0-60 K from Ace Hardware & they all seem to Flower In August ! They seem to like the surf, Its Red & Granular. Ed. Last edited by edzone9 : 09-13-2014 at 03:25 PM. |

Re: FHIA 21 Plantain Rare Find ?
I've read that FHIA-21 is supposed to be good for chips. I have some Haitian customers and they prefer french plantains for "taste". I think they taste a little more starchy. Hua moa is good as tostones, but terrible mashed. They are ok as maduros but not too black. The best maduros I have had actually came from ARH. I dont know what to do with orinoco. It wasnt good as maduros and wasnt great as chips or tostones. But thats my personal taste.
