Default Flag leaf or is it sick?

A new leaf just opened & it is smaller & skinnier than others. It started out being real skinny and now almost all unfurled, it is about half the size of others (length) & almost half as wide. I've seen flag leafs & they are usually short & round...this is shorter & skinnier & light colored so far... still greening up.
It's in 24X 18 pot & the plant base is 6 inches wide. I'm half & half thinking on flag leaf-- or is it a sick leaf? If it is flag, I hope it doesn't go thru shock when we plant it inground next month.
Sorry I don't have my camera w/ me but I explaned it best I can.
It's a Ice Cream --p stem is 7 ft. Growing since a tc June '06 so I've been hoping for a flower this year. Thanks.

I've noticed that he leaf before the flag leaf is usually a little different looking. Could be a sign!

Joy Re: Flag leaf or is it sick?

Patty, there could be 2 reasons;

1. It is possibly a flag leaf prelude to blooming.

2. It is also possible that its has been traumatized and the next leaf or so would be normal again when it gains its momentum.

Once I was rather excited when this happened to a newly acquired Siam Ruby pup. It looked exactly like a flag but...the next 2 turned out normal. I thought I has hit the jackpot.

The other thing, whenever I am away for a few days my sis comes over to water my plants. When I come back from my trip, there's bound to be a couple of 'naners with funny looking leaves cos of not enough of water. When I am around, my plants get watered at least 3 - 4 times a day. My sis only does it once when she comes over.

Tog, you water 3-4 times a day? I thought your biggest problem was too much rain there?

I have a SDC that I was neglecting this winter and it did just that. Put out a leaf just like you described. I was all excited but started giving it a little more water and its put out 4 normal leaves.

I am maniacal. Since all the plants at my house are in pots, it's ok and its a really bad habit of mine. Now you know why I can't grow agave at home. All my agaves are at my nursery out in the open and my worker is not to water them when it rains but only once a couple of days when its really hot.
The stuff I keep at home are the wet boys.

Does it look something like this. The plant also put out seven pups all at once. This is a young plant six mounth old tc, so I know it is not ready to flower. I also have a kru doing the same thing.

Thanks. It hasn't been watered since last Tuesday so I will give it a second big can of water now of the day...and maybe more later. It could be underwatered like you said. That's what happens when I'm not here...these guys don't watch the plants!
Now, to wait & see what comes out next LOL. Thanks.

Tony, it looks similar but not as long in proportion to the other leaves. It's not yellowing, just light green from being rolled up. It's still unfurling at very top. Can't wait to see what comes out next.
Forgot to say tyhat the leaf before looked 'funny' coming out. But, it is normal size now after a struggle to come out & unfurl..

This is the Siam Ruby Liar I was talking about. The pix shows the last leaf a little bigger. As you can see the bottom leaves are of regular size. It just took a couple more days and the scam was discovered. Darn Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!

Howard, actually I was pissed with my friend (very close buddy). I asked him to purchase for me 10 pups from different sources and I ended up with his generosity of giving me 12 pups from one source. Boy, did he get an ear load from me - don't get me wrong, that's friendship in SEA, we scream at each other for their kindness. If someone, gives you a big plant, instead of being thankful, we will kick him by saying; why not a bigger one, you stingy or something? This is the same guy who's been giving me his Ae Ae's. He asked me how many I wanted, I told him to go count all the pups, that's all I wanted.

All 12 came in this color and in 2 months, they became 33 - all same color! Arrggh...

As Mitchell was saying, sometimes there is a half or quarter leaf that emerges just before the flag leaf. Jarred talked about it here: Is this It?

Took some pics last few days. The leaf is less than 1/2 size of others & greened up now. There is another new leaf that looks pretty normal - still coming out. False alarm but I guess it's a good thing cuz I still want to plant it inground and THEN it can flower.

I take that back now that I am here at Mike's house. He told me on phone yesterday that it was opened & looked normal. Now that I'm here tonight, it is little bigger than the last but weird.
Normally when leafs come out, they go opposite @ other with top facing up. This last leaf is growing right over the last leaf in same direction. If it flops over to opposite side, the bottom of leaf will be facing up. Don't know if I explained that well,...it is weird. I'm sure it's all because the pot is rootbound but can't do anything till it warms up. DANG
