In many of the older neighborhoods in the Phoenix metro area there are above and below ground irrigation systems of pipes and ditches to move large amounts of untreated water onto bermed properties. It takes about 24 hours or so for the water to seep into the soil. A friend is having irrigation reestablished on his property and is going to plant a few more bananas. I told him I would find out what I can about how to approach it, he had a liver transplant a few years ago and doesn't use the computer much at all so I try to help him with what I have learned here.

Bananas to not swim. They do not like to be in standing water. 24 hours might be too long. 48 hours would definitely be too long. I would suggest more frequent applications of smaller quantities of water.

Bananas that have been waterlogged (where the oxygen is pushed out of the root zone for too long) will turn yellow, look withered, and die, but that will not become immediately obvious - might take 2-3 weeks to fully show symptoms, so I would ease into this and experiment before going whole hog.
