Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
I read that some put support under the fruit stalk to support the weight.
I got some Dwarf Orinico, Namwah(Icecream?) in June/July should I plan to build some support for them? The D O has just a few hands maybe 20 fruits in total. While the Namwah all have maybe 6-10 hands each but in my view pretty small fruit. If and when should I give some support for them and how? Do I just get a piece of lumber and something soft on top for the support of the stalk? My first time with fruit...! |

Re: Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
The DO might not need it, but the Namwah will.

Re: Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
Not necessarily on the Namwah. My neighbor never supports hers and that mat has produced at least a dozen bunches over the last two years, and not one have fallen over.

Re: Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
Fortunatly my Williams is next to a fence so I tie it with a rope. Williams need staking or tying as they produce big heavy bunches especially if they are well fed and watered. I have found Lady Finger don't need staking as the bunches are small although the plants a rather tall,

Re: Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
Determining if or when to support is usually a simple physics question.
Most plants don't need to be supported and will usually have a noticeable lean before falling. Basic keys are bunch weight, P-stem height and angle (base to TDC of bunch)

Re: Got fruit, do I support it, when and how?
I liked the analogy of trying to hold your arms out away from your body and try to hold a 50 lb bunch of bananas. You might topple....haha
