Default Gros Michel on Martinique..

I was thinking about heading down to Martinique to visit some friends for a long weekend. Does anyone know if they cultivate Gros Michel on Martinique?

My first bananas were Gros Michel. I got them in St. Lucia, the next island down, in the chain, but that was 35 years ago.

There was a now defunct on line nursery I believe selling Gros Michel var. "San Martinico" a while back, unfortunately no longer. I would bet if you ask around and find the right connections you will get lucky and find a few remnants. Find a local pub in a rural area and get friendly with the locals, it can work wonders. Good Luck.

That nursery from PR is still active. However, the Gros Michel var. "San Martinico" that they are hawking is NOT a Gros Michel. It is a banana that is known internationally as Monte Cristo, or Bungulan in the Philippines. The fruits remain green even when ripe. Not a typical Gros Michel characteristic.

Thanks Chong, I was kind of wondering about their reliability and had suspicions.

In some quarters in Puerto Rico, they call a red banana, Guineo Montecristi, but the red banana is called "Morado" internationally, including South America. However, Monte Cristo (internationally) is a variety that has green fruits even when ripe. While a few local communities may refer to Lacatan as Monte Cristo, that is not what it's called internationally. I have even read it somewhere that the Monte Cristo is called the "false" Lacatan. Maybe that's where you got that impression.
