How is an Ae Ae as a houseplant?
I've been thinking about getting an Ae Ae but with living in ohio I would have to overwinter it in my basement or try to keep it in a south facing window in the late fall and winter. Has anyone had success growing one in zone 6? I just don't want to kill a $100+ plant if it doesn't overwinter well or won't grow in ohio.

Re: How is an Ae Ae as a houseplant?
I've heard they don't do well indoors....but I don't have any personal experience with them, so don't take this information dogmatically. I'd wait to see what others have to say.

Re: How is an Ae Ae as a houseplant?
There are a few long threads over at Dave's Garden that you should read if you are a member. There are many experienced growers over there, and they all had ones that died while being overwintered. Some of them had ones that made it through the winter looking fine, and then when spring came, they found that their AeAe had been slowly rotting.
I'm not saying that it can't be done; I'm sure it can, and I know of at least two people that have done it successfully. Miamimax is a member here that has at least one. There is another grower and member here -- I think she goes by Gothqueen over at Dave's. I think she has a greenhouse where her AeAe stays for the winter. Here's a link to one of the threads at Dave's: Tropical Plants: Death of an ae ae I think the key to success may have something to do with very little to no water in the winter. |
