How many leaves? - California Gold
My California Gold I received from Benny is strong. It's 5 feet in height and supporting 18 leaves and 2 vigorous pups. When does this thing flower?

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Age is the best way to predict flowering. How old is it? Is it in the ground or in a container?

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
From my experience, bananas in general develope 30-40 leaves before they
start to flower. So the period of growing time depends on the environment where the banana grows. In my case Cal.Gold took 31 months before it flowered. |

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Since inception, how many days have had a median temperature of 77 F or higher?

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
I have not counted the # of days of median over 77. I'd guess this thing has had close to 30 leaves now. It's sending one up every 6 days. Sounds like we're getting close.
I received the pup from Benny around this time last year. I suppose it's close to 18 months old. I kept it in the greenhouse over the winter and planted it out in mid-April. Last edited by buffy : 08-17-2010 at 07:58 AM. |

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Can you show us a photo? Is it 5ft total, with the leaves and all, or 5ft of pseudostem?

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Absolutely Gorgeous Greg! Do you think you may have pups available for sale in the near future...*hint-hint* and did you get yours from Jeff or another member? Once again it's a truly fantastic looking naner! =)

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Actually it is about degree-days, and it varies a bit among cultivars.

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold
Richard, I can certainly see how degree days are important, but why the question about the number of days with a median temp over 77 degrees F? I'd be willing to bet that we have virtually no days with a median temp over 77 here in coastal Ventura, and yet there are plenty of actively fruiting bananas around my neighborhood.
