How to sweeten bananas
I have no clue about bananas - I got this little plant a year ago, and man did it grow. Jack and the beanstalk has a contender here in Malta!!!
Anyways, I now have one big bunch of green bananas that are so heavy that the stalk is nearly touching the ground. Someone told me that they won't be sweet, yet someone else mentioned that I have to somehow place sugar in some sort of sack and it will sweetn the fruit....duuuh!!! I still can't figure this out. Can someone help me please?? Thanks David from Malta |

Re: How to sweeten bananas
if its a sweet banana to Begin with its probably going to be just fine if its getting the right amount of sun. you mite want to prop up the heavy fruit stock with a sport that way it wont brake if it dos the bananas wont get any bigger but as to how sweet they will be just depends on what variety they are and how well you have cared for them Malta's pretty sunny place so I'm sure they will be fine if after they ripen they aren't sweet then its probably a plantain they have to be cooked to eat them or they will give you a tummy acke the sugar thing is nonsense

Re: How to sweeten bananas
Hello Deerabbit - How long ago did the first fruit appear? In general it takes about 4 months of warm weather to ripen a bunch and I think Malta is pretty warm in summer. So if you have had the fruit for several months and they are getting round and plump, you could leave the bunch on the plant until the first banana starts to change colour, then cut the whole bunch down and wait a few days for them to ripen. It all depends on what type of banana you have and how long the fruit has been on the plant really. If it is an eating banana, it will be naturally sweet when ripe. If it is a plantain or seeded banana, you will need to either cook them or just enjoy the look of them.
