hurricane bananas
just got the electricity turned back on. been off for almost 2 days. no damage just a bunch of small limbs on the ground. I had plenty of time on my hands outside of getting the generator running. potted almost 24 gran nain pups. also received 3 ice creams in the mail Thursday just before the hurricane hit us. we are about 45 minutes from St. Augustine. so I potted them. I have 4 more ice creams coming, should be here tomorrow or Tuesday.

Re: hurricane bananas
I'm glad the worst you had was the inconvenience of no power. I'm sure the Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina beaches took a beating.
I had heavy winds all day Friday & no rain. So I prepared for a power outage in case one happened Friday night. But, we moved into the South West sector of the storm as night fell: no wind & no rain. Saturday was calm all day. Anyway, my bananas made it thought the storm with only a couple of broken leaves. ... Where did you get the ice creams from? |

Re: hurricane bananas
Most likely Wellsprings gardens. They are in Lakeland and on eBay. They sell TC plantlets so the ice creams will be tall namwas. Excellent banana. Unfortunately TC bananas get mixed up a lot. Wellspring is where my tall Namwa came from sold as ice cream. As far as I know Agristarts isn't tcing the real ice cream. Hopefully an expert can confirm. Either way you will know fast Namwa looks totally differt than ice cream.

Re: hurricane bananas
yep, that's what the card says wellspring gardens. can you tell when they are 10 inches tall? they almost look like my snow banana which is about the same size.

Re: hurricane bananas
I doubt it. Not by me anyway. When they get 3' or so they are super easy to tell apart. The real ice cream will be totally green. Namwas have a pinkish tint to them. Tall Namwa is an excellent banana. I have one this year about 17' and 65" around at the base. It's fruiting now. Perfect timing for frozen bananas this winter. Lol.
My real ice cream I got this year from a member on here. That is about the only way to get one via a pup from a memeber here who has fruited it to confirm it's the real deal. Most people who I've talked to who owns both prefers the Namwa over the real ice cream. Hopefully I will be able to compare the two next year.

Re: hurricane bananas
my ebay site says they are a blue java. also says the skin of the fruit will be a blueish color and the leaves will be a silvery green.

Re: hurricane bananas
Probably had about 200 immature bunches go down. I am debating plowing it out and hitting reset or trying to clean it up.

1) The corms are still good. 2) Stand the plants back up if not broken and/or cut the pstem off at the point it broke saving save much of the pstem as possible. The plants will regrow much faster than starting over. 3) This could be an opportunity to divide the large corms and replant new groups. Banana plants will take a beating and live. The plant itself (corm) is under ground; the above ground pstem is just a limb. That is, Unless you just want to put in a different verity |

Re: hurricane bananas
What variety are those Bananas? I might want to come get some of them, if they can survive in zone 8b. It's only a 7 hr drive for me. ... this would help replace the 30 plus mature plants my local utility company killed.

Re: hurricane bananas
I have about 30 varieties. Mostly plantains. My Hua Moas got hammered badly as did my Giant Plantains and the African Rhino Horns are a lost cause. But the short variety with a bunch is Baloy

Re: hurricane bananas
I got on a thread here that said somebody near you had decided to change bananas and had invited members to come get the plants and corms. they left with trailers full. quite a number of members.

Re: hurricane bananas
About 4 years ago, I moved my farm across the highway. A bunch of people came and got corms, it was great.

I remember now you posted these were plantains. The Hua Moas & African Rhino would be interesting to try. I'm on the northern edge of their temperate zone. But an 800 mile drive (round trip) is not worth it just for a couple of plants. ... I'm needing, large corms/plants. banana types for zone 8. ... Have any of these downed by the storm? |
