I have no idea what banana it is, I got it from a friend, who got it from a woman years ago who was from the Philippines. It is a pup off of that banana. The sad part is the bananas will not ripen here. I am zone 6

Congrats on the flag Vickie, don't count yourself out because of the time of year, not this year anyway, we just now in N. IL. are having weather that should have been here the middle to end of June. So we may get an extra couple of months out this season! Best Wishes

Congratulations Vickie ! Never seen anything that looked more like a flag leaf! Great flower pics. Should put them in Banana ID section, bet someone could figure the cultivar's name! Good luck on ripening time. BTW, there are people here with ideas on ripening "Late" bloomers. Should start a thread for that, too .

It's definitely worth fighting for. Don't give up just yet, you might be surprised, maybe you will find a way how to protect the bunch or it will ripen fast enough.

I'm with Jack on this. How far are you willing to go?( no for once I'm not meaning to be "cheeky") If the plant is short enough you could provide a cheap hoop house maybe out of PVC covered with plastic using clips to hold the plastic to the frame. I get these clips from Charlies Greenhouses. Heat could be provided with a kerosene heater although this may taint the fruit, not sure. Barrels of water could provide some passive heat retention.. There's many options , it depends how cold of a zone 6 you are. In NJ , no way, in say Virginia it might just work. Maybe a local greenhouse could store it for you though I think it would take a huge effort to do it with minimal transplant shock...........once again how crazy do you want to get? Sorry for the rant but I'd like to see you get fruit.

Then again there's always next year, you've got a flower in zone 6 and that's something I'd guess most of us haven't done.

Just so there is no confusion the banana bloom with bananas are from 3yrs ago, the tree was huge then. This is the same variety of banana but a much smaller plant. I only have the flag leaf this year so far. The banana is planted in the ground. We had about 3 days last year of 4*F last year. No way can I leave it in the ground. And I have only a basement with a couple of windows and shop lights. It gets down to 50*F in the winter. But I keep on plugging away. LOL
