Joy I either have a flag on my
Ice Cream banana or.... it's an ear of corn This is one of the first bananas I got after joining here from Sandy 0225 so that makes it late Sept /early Oct 2008. it was a 7' banana cut down to 3 1/2 for shipping and, last year grew to 8 1/2 ft ( p-stem height) and was chopped down to 5 ' for the winter. It's up to almost 8' this year and just put out this flag over the past couple of days.


Here's the whole plant:

It didn't put near as many leaves out as the others so far this season and now I know why.

I have an Ice Cream banana plant but it's only about 2 feet tall. You said you cut it to 5 feet tall... Did you cut off the leaves too? Did you store it as a dormant plant? Sorry for all the questions but this is total excite!

Nicest thing you could have said JaNan.... Thanks......I feel kind of"stinky" about now over it!

Thanks Cory, yeah I just whacked it off in October every year with a machete through the p-stem and brought it into my heated front porch indoors and it always started growing right away so, in colder zones this seems a good way to go. It was too tall for me to leave it whole and bring in each fall. Don't ever worry about questions..... just how I learned here.
I still don't have a clue really ....

Bob, you've got a strong-looking plant so I'm guessing you'll get quite a few hands. Well-deserved reward for your hard work. Getting them to mature will be a challenge, I imagine. Better get some plans for a heated greenhouse!

Hey Matt, my neighbors must think I'm nuts and one last night was asking why we kept staring at the one plant every 5 minutes.... the cat's out of the bag. Hope I can get some to share.
