I need help
One of my Ae's Ae's broke off to the dirt level. It was weak and I was trying to carefully carry it outside to repot it deeper. It was alive untill I tried to put it down and it broke off. I am so upset. It is alive what are the chances of it resprouting like the other bananas? Do it keep the soil dry. Do I put it in shade. Please help me if you can.

Re: I need help
Sounds like the same thing that happened to my Dwarf red. I had the corm planted to deep and it held water on the base of the stem when it wasn't warm enough and eventually rotted the stem till it just fell over on me. I would say get the corm in highest postion in the soil mixture just to cover the roots and give that corm a dose of full sun and it will come to life, produce pups or both. :^) Good Luck

Re: I need help
Patty it was 3 ft or more. I wintered it over in a west window all winter. And it had new leaves coming out. It was just not a strong trunk. I am so disappointed. I am hoping pups come up from the root. I was going to repot it and plant it deeper it just snapped off even though I was trying to be careful. Sometimes gardening sucks.

Re: I need help
Vickie, it should re-sprout from the center where it broke. Just pot it up and don't let the soil be too moist. The best thing for it now is to make sure the corm and roots stay warm. It may pup also, but if the psuedostem was that week the corm might not be big enough to produce pups yet.
Good luck! |

Re: I need help
Plant both parts. More than likely it will grow from the corm, but if it was broken low enough, the actual growing point may be with the stem portion. You have nothing to lose by planting both. One should grow.

Re: I need help
The stem has noting it broke above the corm. I checked and there is noting to grow. I dug the dirt out around the corm so it will dry out some and hopefully resprout. This I think is like a plant that gets a weak stem from growing inside and needs to be hardened off. You better well bet I will be careful with my other one when I take it outside.

Re: I need help
A similar thing happened to me as I was planting my Truly Tiny yesterday; it broke off at the soil line. I planted the corm in the ground and the 'top' piece was also replanted in the pot. It had 2 sets of leaves, so I hope there might be the growing point in it. Good luck to you.
