I think I have outsmarted the Squirrels!!
I posted a few days ago about Squirrels eating my young Banana Shoots (pups),so I had to come up with so way to stop them, short of getting rid of them by sending them to "Squirrel Heaven"!!!.....Here is what I came up with, these round small cages made out of 1"x1" wire. I cut the bottom so it has prongs to stick in the ground. I used Electric Fence wire to weave over the top. When the Pup gets bigger, I will remove the top wire, but still leave the bottom cyclindical wire. I have made several and made them different sizes. Seems the Squirrels here don't fool with the bigger "pups"....Quick as I see a young shoot break the ground, I cover it with one of these!! So far have not lost any more Banana shoots! YeeeeeeHaawww!!!!

Re: I think I have outsmarted the Squirrels!!
No Electricity...LOL, (I felt like it the other day) when I walked out there and they had ate around 6 shoots!!! No, I am just using the electric fence "Wire" for the Top, for lack of anything better, then I can take it off later when the shoot gets bigger.

Re: I think I have outsmarted the Squirrels!!
Frank, it looks like that will work nicely. I hate squirrels because they are constantly digging in my mulch around my palm trees but they have never touched my bananas for some reason. Then their stupid little nuts sprount and I get small trees growing in my beds. I have a problem with voles digging tunnels around my yard now. It's always something...

Re: I think I have outsmarted the Squirrels!!
i like your idea Frank! unfortunately i have a couple of large walnuts in my yards - giant squirrel magnets. i use something like your cage made of pliable branches for my passion flowers. my other cure,,, two staffy bulls. the roof rats never touch the ground.

Re: I think I have outsmarted the Squirrels!!
That wire cage wouldn't stand up to the squirrels we have in the uk.
