Just for Us.....maybe not....
Perhaps this has been posted already.
A company called Ecoffins USA is making, now get this, Caskets made from Banana Sheaves(basically they are discarded pseudostems). Ecoffins is suspiciously based in Denver. Isn't Gabe from Denver? they come in two types--red stripe: and the black stripe: Here is their website: All Natural Biodegradable Banana Caskets Here is the story from our local paper: The Post and Courier - Charleston SC

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
Having been in the business years ago it seems to be a preferable alternative to the most inexpensive of caskets we used to refer to as "Fuzzy Mahoghany".

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
They must have to add more soil as they decompose. Interesting.

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
If I wanted to be buried in the ground, I'd want one.

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
There is a very dark comedy about the funeral and film industry called "The Loved One". It had a great cast of Jonathon Winters, Rod Steiger, and Roddy McDowell and many others. Liberace was the casket salesman.
The Loved One (1965)

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
There's also Death At A Funeral, which is admittedly a bit more about the living but darkly hilarious in its own way, plus it's filled with British people. Although, for disposal of dead bodies in a black comedy, nothing even comes close to the classic Consuming Passions, with Johnathan Price and Victoria Redgrave, and the incomparably named Prunella Scales.

Re: Just for Us.....maybe not....
Mitchel, even for regular caskets most cemeteries around here (and most place in the U.S., I would think) require that you buy a concrete "liner" which is basically a concrete box so that the soil will remain flat. Old cemeteries are more uneven and mow. I've thought that I'd like to be buried in a nice wooden casket like we used for my mom five years ago but maybe this banana thing will catch my fancy (or my wife's or son's).
