It is going to freeze tonight. SO I cut down all the hanging fruit. I figure a bland banana today is better then NO banana's tomorrow.

For real, you have to be kidding. I'm here in Pensacola scurring around trying to protect plants since it is freezing here too. The low here should be low to mid forties not 30. Thank goodness for Al Gore and Global Warming or we'd have snow drifts. I will probably loose some plants because of this very discouraging freeze this early in the season.

Will you get fruit from the corm of the Blue Java next year or will this freeze cost you a year?

It is currently 40F outside my house right now. I do see that it has been updated to show 31 tonight and tomorrow then it will warm up some again.

I do not think I will lose any corms. I applied a thick lawyer a hose manure yesterday to help protect them, and layout the leafs from the ones I just cut hoping it will help.

The Blue Java has a pup that is about 4 feet tall right now, and another one at 7. I am hoping it will flower early next year. I think I might finally have the timing right. This is my 3rd season with Ice Cream/blue java and this is the 3rd time it was been cut early due to winter bloom.

The ripe fruit will likely not be that good, but I recommend experimenting with cooking them when they are green. A good place to start is to consider them like potatoes, and use them however you would cook with potatoes. Peeled, cut and boiled for a soup or stew is easy, some varieties mash up well and can be like mashed potatoes, fried as chips or fries is always tasty too. They are really very versatile when green at and it doesn't matter that they are unripe and underdeveloped.

I managed to cover my Blue Java well but it is only about three foot tall. I'd say my odds neXt year are pretty good for a frozen unripe stalk next winter. LOL

Also I should note, if you boil a green banana in its skin, it will easily peel and you are left with a cooked starch inside (sometimes if you boil them in the skins a sticky residue will be left on the pot). This can then be mashed, cut up or added to dishes as you please. But if you are going to fry them, its best to peel them before cooking (with a knife or potato peeler) so they don't absorb water. The sap is often sticky (and will certainly stain your clothes), so act accordingly.

Yep, they updated the forecast yet again. Now its saying tonight will be 28F vs 31. Last night hit 32 but i'm not sure for how long. At 8am plant damaged looked like a min, now that the sun is out it looks as if the leafs are just getting worse.

Last night or Tuesday morning I observed a low of 28. 31 was forecast. Mother Nature sure doesn't have a sense of humor or if she does it is twisted. After she thoroughly kicked our butts last year you think she'd show some mercy. If this is the way things are going to be I think I'll start wearing a cup before she targets a more sensitive area. LOL.

I think if your IC is 4 feet now, you will be good this spring. Mine seems to flower between 7 - 9'
