lots of fruit
We have had a lot of rain in December and with the overcast the bananas are not happy. But there is a lot of fruit - 3 on the tall Orinocos, 1 on the orphan plantain from the lagoon, the first Manzano bunch just ripening, a huge bunch on the Blue Java and several other plants looking suspiciously big and fat in the trunk. After all the Dwarf Cavendish, Orinoco and Tall Red fruit that we had this autumn, the gardeners check the plants very carefully as they know they get the excess - plus they are intrigued by the different varieties not normally seen here. I suspect that their gift of a dc type (guineo normal) was to soften me up for a pup of something more special from Jarred! Oh! I am so cynical! Haha!!

Re: lots of fruit
OK Chris - here we go!
3 bunches on the orinoco in varying stages - they should be ripe in Feb, April and May. The first fruit off my manzano - you can see the scar where we cut the first hand yesterday as the first finger had turned yellow. I will wait until the next finger ripens to the soft stage as yesterdays fruit didn't tast quite ripe although it was yellow and had split it's skin. It was quite astringent. Here is the hand off the bunch above First bunch off the ice cream and it is a whopper. And last of all - the orphan plantain. |

Re: lots of fruit
Hey cassie;
Those are great looking bananas. It seems to me that things always taste better in the tropics, especially fresh fruit. Oh how I wish I were back in the islands. Hydroid |

Re: lots of fruit
Great pics, thanks for sharing!!
Nice to see the bunches, I remember sending the baby plants! You really need to wait till those Apple get very ripe, as you found out! They are good though, you're in for a treat!

Re: lots of fruit
Thanks for all the kind words guys - I appreciate them.
Jarred - we waited until the next fingers were really ripe and soft, and they are delicious! Sweet and tangy at the same time! Thank you!! Mark - the ice cream has grown hugely since you saw it and only flowered for the first time in November. Luckily we have lots of people to share fruit with - they hand over avocados or mangos and get nanas in return. Just as well really considering the sizes of some of the bunches - the gardeners have lots of kids too which helps! |
