Mekong Giant
This has been a strange acting guy from day 1. Got it as a very nice pup from Larry and potted it up asap. Dappled sunlight not too much water blah blah. It got late in the season so I didn't plant it. Stayed in the kitchen all winter which wasn't more than 3 months and did good. It survived but didn't grow. March got here and it was warm enough to take them out for a stroll and a drink of water. I guess I damn near killed it getting frisky with the water but I left it alone for a few more weeks. Planted it in a fresh pot and it started growing a bit. Put it in the ground about 6 weeks ago and it was doing nothing, As a few of you said it started growing fairly good there (finally) and now this little dude is pushing a pup. I guess it's gonna roll. No name yet, might go with Frank Shu....

Re: Mekong Giant
Have one myself that I got last year late so didn't grow much(in the ground) pulled it out and put in pot with cedar chips like I do with another banana species I have. Withered back to almost nothing but still saw some green in the stem so planted it back outside in May, sat there and didn't do ANYTHING...but didn't die either. Today, it's starting to really take off where I have it planted along a south wall so gets a lot of sun.
This fall, when I pull it out of the ground I will clean the dirt off the corm as I didn't do that last year so probably kept the corm damp too long. |

Re: Mekong Giant
Wow I didn't know you were trying to grow Mekong Giant.
I remember doing some research on it a while back and watched this vid about the way it sends out pups "runners" several feet away.

Re: Mekong Giant
I like the bamboo edging you have around that plant. I thought about doing something similar to keep the darn weeds at bay. :-)
