Default Is Musa Calif. Gold prolific or not?

Hello Friends,

The hands of my Calif. Gold, potted in a 60L container are very poor.

The first picture shows the inside of the first hands which consist of only
five fingers.
And the second picture shows the inside of the second hands of only four
fingers.

Is Calif. Gold basically unprolific? Or is my case something special?

The reason for the small amount of fingers, is due to being in a container, you will never get much from most varieties in a container, compared to planting them the ground. the result will always be better planting in the ground, even if you use a 60+ gal container, which is insane, but a few members have done it. How much you fertilize per month per lbs of fert? what zone are you in?

In a 40 gal container on my CG's I have received 15-20 small naners but not anymore. In the ground I avg 40-60 nice size fingers, but if your in an area where you have to pull them up in the winter, I can understand why you use a container.

Nice plant though and congrats on the flower and your future naners!

Big Tony

Hello Big Tony,

Thanks for your comment which I understood very well.
I live in a coast side of central Japan by the Pacific ocean, of which climate
zone, I believe is about 9B.

I grow almost all bananas in a 60liter(abt16gal) container, and I give liquid
frtilizer of 55 almost every weeks and I see this works well to ther bananas except Calif. Gold.

This, in fact, is the fundamental reason why I started to wonder if this banana
could be unprolific.

Okay I thought you were out there in the far east. Most any fertilizer will work, main thing I found out is with my soil I needed more acid, which my cali golds love, and I use Azomite because it has a good amount of micro-nutrients. I have had better results with using Azomite on my newly planted and I use it in my containerd plants with good results. Maybe get a soil analysis to see where your soil is at and then that might give you a better picture of where you are at and what might be needed in your area.

I agree with what Big Tony has to say, but I would also add that California Gold, which is either Dwarf Orinoco or a sport of it, is not a very productive banana. Note than even Tony's in-ground ones are only producing 40-60 fingers, which isn't much by banana standards.

If I can get two flowers off the same mat in a growing season, unlike many other varieties I think prolific it is. :^)

Hello Mark & Michael,

Thanks for your commets and I do agree with both of you.
In fact, I usually harvest nearly 100 fingers of Drwf Cavenndish even in an
equivalent container of 60liters(16gal).
So I thought that Cal. Gold coule be an unprolific variety.
