Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
I just got this nanner from Chris in Tampa at the end of June, and potted it up and it is ready to send me its first flower!!! The overall height of this Laterita is only about 3', so you can guess how surprised I was when I saw the flag leaf last week. The thing is even sent out 3 pups to the edge of the pot!!! I just wanted to post a pic of it and show it off and to thank Chris, publicly for all the cool things he sent up to a few of us in SE TN!!!
Please disregard the other bloom in the background in the second pic... My Parrot's Beak Heliconia is blooming also, and I forgot to remove from pic. (SORRY) |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Hey guys,
Thanks for the compliments... I really enjoy trading with other members because most of the time, you know what you get will have been taken good care of... Kylie, one of the amazing things to me with this little baby was how quickly it took off and bloomed... This guy was a mere corm with about 4" of pstem when I got it less than 6 weeks ago!!! Truly an amazing little guy with LOTS of stored energy!!!!!!!!!! |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Good going , still waiting for a flower on anything here , I suspect perhaps my bigger Zebrina will be the first to flower.
When you have a spare let me know I'm sure I've got something here to trade. Are you into Alocasia or Colocasia , these I have the odd spare of , plus one or two Musa that could be divided. Later Steve

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Randy,
I am pretty sure me and you felt the same way when we saw our flags (me-Royal Purple). Its like, you are looking for flags on things, but not on a banana plant that is 3 foot tall, and then it pops out (not actually) and it is a great feeling of... accomplishment? sure why not! I am almost dont putting in a brick walkway through the little garden I have, and I will post pics tomorrow when done. Thats why I dont have a pic of the bloom for today, College move-in day for my brother, so we went there, and then the walkway. |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Nice looking laterita, Randy! I now have mine in a pot as well since it spreads so much if it's in the ground (at least in a warm climate like here). I potted it up as one pup in about a 15 gallon pot in the spring. It now has about 6-8 stalks of varying heights and has bloomed about 4 or 5 times. My avatar is of this plant. I also have several pics of it in my gallery.
When I had this plant in the ground I used to give away pups about 3 times a year. I will definitely have several in the spring if anyone is interested then. I don't really want to try to dig out any pups from the pot right now as I'm afraid it would hurt the overall health of the plant if I did. Plus the average height of the plant is about 7-8' feet and it's behind a 'Black Magic' EE that is almost 6' tall! A little tough to get to. |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Chris,
The Saba was slow to get started, but it is now growing very well!!! It currently has about 5 leaves and is about 3' overall in height... The only reason I haven't posted a pic of it yet is because I planted a couple of Illustris in front of it and they have grown like CRAZY!!!! I was going to wait until the Saba tops them and then post a pic... The Saba has finally caught up with the Illustris, so it shouldn't be another week or so before it rises above them... I will be sure and snap a shot soon... Randy |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Sorry to hear of your misfortunes, Kylie. Hope your trade wasn't with another member of this board... If it was, let us know so we won't have the same thing happen to us... If it is any consolation, I would be happy to send you a pup next spring if you don't get one sooner... Let me know and I am sure we can work something out...

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Yeah Kylie, sorry to hear.
But if it was someone here put some negative feedback on 'em! But I highly doubt anyone on this site is here to do that to someone else. Thats what Gardenweb is for. J/K! |

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Randy, nice-looking plant! Mine hasn't grown nearly as well as yours, but has about 3 pups and is chugging along pretty good now. I should get a bloom next month, hopefully. Wonder how cold-hardy Musa laterita is...?

Re: Musa Laterita set to BLOOM!!!
Hey Frank,
Thanks... Hope to see a pic of yours on here soon!!! Keep us updated... I plan on overwintering mine inside this winter and possibly giving it the test next year... I have made some new plans for the back next spring... The basjoo mat at the end of the pool will be going and expansion of the bed will be made to accomodate different nanners and maybe even a few of my new palms (i.e S. palmetto 'Lisa')... Gonna have alot of extra basjoos to find new homes for!!! Some of the nanners from that mat are well over 15' overall, not to mention the huge ee's mixed it. Like to dig!?!?! Pic taken 7/7/07 Remember how you couldn't hardly even walk by them? Too close to the pool and I still have my larger mat of basjoos... |
