Musella lasiocarpa care
Hi,
I just bought a Musella lasiocarpa as a medium sized plant (probably another year or 2 until it flowers) and I just want to make sure that it has the right care. Its winter now so I will be keeping it indoors until spring. Should I let it continue growing, or cut all the leaves and let the roots establish themselves first. Also has anyone had luck overwintering these outside in my zone? It would be planted this spring in my best microclimate, but I havent even tried a Musa Basjoo in the ground (I bought one on ebay about 2 years ago and it died only about 3 weeks later). I dont mind giving it is nesecary protection, and already have some palm trees in the ground. Sorry if these questions have already be asked, but I didnt see them all when I did a search. Thanks in advance!

Re: Musella lasiocarpa care
I have one. It wintered over last winter under a foot of straw mulch. Only a pup came up this past season, and that was very late. So this fall I dug it up and potted it. It's in the basement now.

Re: Musella lasiocarpa care
Mine overwinters outside, but defoliates each winter. It is 5-6 years old, and has not flowered yet.

Re: Musella lasiocarpa care
Thanks a lot for your help. So basically it is possible for it to overwinter in my zone, but better for the plant well being if I bring it in. Good thing about this banana (not really a banana but a close relative) is that it doesnt get too tall so I wont have that hard of a time finding a good spot indoors for the winter.
Thanks again, and anymore advice or experience is greatly appreciated!
