Default My ''Ae Ae'' and ''Belle''!!!

Hello!

Yesterday,i was delighted to receive a parcel from Florida,it was an Ae Ae pup from Greenie!!!! Frank sent me an awesome and huge pup,the biggest i have ever received with a corm diameter of around 20cm!!!! I had also asked him for a ''Belle'' pup and he included one in the parcel as a gift! Thank you very much Frank for both!!!!!

I potted the Ae Ae in ericaceous, peat based soil with 1/3 sand mixed in for extra drainage and the Belle in slightly acidic cactus soil which already has some sand(also about 1/3)for better drainage.

Here is a photo of the Ae Ae just after potting it up! As you can see,it had pushed new growth while in transit and was crushing it to the side of the box. Looking at it today again,i think it grew some already since potting it up yesterday!

I will post a photo of the Belle once it grows its first leaf!

Looking forward to new growth!!!!

Mushtag,

Don't you think its a shade too dark to remain there?

Plants need light as much as sun.

Thank you very much all of you for your replies!

Thank you very much orinoko!

Thanks a lot mushtaq86! I will keep my Ae Ae there or maybe move it a few meters away in a little more protected spot, till i prepare a planting spot for it in my Pyrgos Garden. It needs some hardscape work to be done first though so it will probably have to wait a few months potted.

Thank you very much Matt!
I would love to plant it in the ground next time i go to Pyrgos but unfortunately i have no open spots right now for a banana. I plan to make additional planting beds in the coming months though and as soon as the one planned for the Ae Ae is opened,it goes in the ground!!!

Just to correct the admittedly logical confusion the photo created, the one in front is my Ae Ae but the second visible one is not the Belle. I havent posted any photo of the Belle yet as it needs to grow up a little to have something to show
Now,about the ID of the second visible banana,i will be making a new thread soon with photos of it and its siblings. Dan is in for a big thank you for those!!!

About the light available in the spot my Ae Ae is,it gets noon to late afternoon full sun. I took that photo just before sunset, when the sun had disappeared behind other buildings unfortunately...

Here is a picture taken today under the noon sun!

If you look closely and compare with the previous photo, you can see it already grew some!

Here is a photo update of my Ae Ae! More than 2/3rds of the new growth you see was pushed in the last 2 days and growth rate is increasing dramatically day by day! Just checking tonight on it again,i saw it grew another 5 or more cm from late afternoon, when this photo was taken!

Looking forward to seeing its first leaf!!!

Hi Kostas

I think you definitely need to move it to a area where its not getting direct, sunlight on it.

Kostas,
Those new leaves will look funny at first. It will eventually even out and start producing normal looking leaves.I would leave it where it has shown growth up to now.Make sure its getting sun! If you move her to shade, she will be prone to disease, bacteria and rot."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
This is just what I think....don't mean to take any of the other forum members advice away either.

Thank you very much all of you for your replys and suggestions!!!

As all newly established pups grown in full sun and growing real fast,my AeAe had and has burns on the outside of it's developing leafs which cause the bends you see. As always, this get progressively less with each new leaf, probably as the root system expands and as I add organic fertilizer. The burns it has are not that bad and the full sun indeed saves from rot, which it was starting to show in a shadier spot I had it. I plan to ground plant it at the edge of shade though so some pups will grow in shade and others in full sun,to keep the mat healthy and good looking at the same time,as they probably do grow more beautiful in shade but are more sensitive and harder to keep from rotting.

Frank helped me a lot with my questions on Ae Ae and its cultivation and so far my pup from him has done excellently! Thanks a lot Frank!!!!
