Re: My Backyard!
Correct Maury!! I put Gourds up for "Purple Martins" each year. The Pole is about 15 ft. high. They really raised alot of babies this year. They usually leave around the middle of July. Really enjoy having them around.

Re: My Backyard!
Wow, they have really grown since the last time I saw them! Looks you don't get much wind damage either. Do you have any pictures of the birds?

Re: My Backyard!
I plan on growing some of those gourds. How big did you drill the holes?
Be well, Mike |

Re: My Backyard!
Mike, I usually cut them 2 1/4" or 2 1/2". You can buy a hole saw to put on a handheld drill to saw the holes. Be sure and drill several 1/4" holes in the bottom of the Gourd for drainage.

Re: My Backyard!
Are the gourds the only thing they'll nest in, or is that for aesthetics?

Re: My Backyard!
Aha, I didn't figure out what a martin was before now. Thanks to Google Picture
Here, the martins make houses under where the roof sticks out over the walls on houses. They also make houses inside the barns, under the roofs. Putting up houses for them would be redicolous here, but sounds cool though. Never heard of anyone doing it. Great pictures though. Gard

Re: My Backyard!
Gard,
I think you are talking about "Barn Swallows" we have them here. Purple Martins will not nest, unless it's in a cavity. I really don't think y'all have "Purple Martins" in Norway!! Frank |
