My Ice Cream bananas!
I got to have my first Ice Cream banana today from my own plant! I thought they were never going to ripen, but I went out this afternoon to check them, and there was one that looked ready. I decided to take a taste test. They are small, but very good!!!

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
There will be a future Zen type moment when I taste the first fruits of my labors. I can only imagine what that first sweet bite must be like. It is one of the things that I will cherish a lifetime.

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
I'm super jealous! I have one I'm just dying to see it bloom, and it stubbornly refuses. Maybe if I'd start wishing it wouldn't bloom--then it will!
How tall were the pups on yours when it started blooming? Maybe that will give me a clue as to how mature mine is now.

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
How long did it take for the fruit to ripen? After 14 months in the ground, my Ice Cream bananas finally flowered one month ago, and my 9-year-old daughter is constantly asking when she'll be able to finally eat them.
3 months? 4 months? Also, mine don't appear blue yet...is that something that will come as they ripen? Last edited by TTP, Fred : 07-05-2008 at 10:22 PM. |

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
Oh, lucky you! I was so excited when my Ice Cream banana fruited last fall, but unfortunately we had a hard freeze before the fruit had time to mature. By the way, I also felt that my fruit never qualified as "bluish." I'd just call it green.
Anyway, congratulations! I hope you're able to enjoy all the fruit before the ants beat you to it. |

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
Well, good for you Anna!!
8 months!! Is that with the dormant winter break, or all in the warm months? Mine is about to bloom, and I'm hoping it will only take about 3 months to ripen my first fruit. It definately won't last thru the winter, and even if I could protect the fruit, I don't think the leaves would make it to provide photosynthesis in the spring. Or do you mean it took 8 months to reach maturity, set fruit, and ripen? |

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
The plants bloomed in November. I was very concerned they wouldn't get through the winter.

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
Great work! Congratulations. I gave up on growing Ice Cream a few years ago because I figured I could never get it to flower or the fruit to ripen in my climate. Oh well, I hear they are really tasty though.

Re: My Ice Cream bananas!
For any others who have successfully grown Ice Cream bananas, was it also your experience that it took 8 months for the fruit to ripen?
Mine put fruit out at the beginning of June--14 months after I planted them--and I can't fathom having to wait until February (assuming no freeze here in the Houston area). |
