Nanners in India & Nepal?

I'm going to India & Nepal for 3 weeks. Does anyone have any tips about what bananas grow there or other things to see?

(India will be Delhi & Varanasi)

Delhi is very humid subtropical/tropical climate, so there will be lots and lots of interesting bananas. The only real problem is that they won't like European climate (it's either too dry or too cold). You might wanna check also some cold hardier variety. Delhi is probably the same climate as Hong Kong, Sao Paulo and other really big almost tropical cities, so you should be able to find something. Transportation and smuggling will be however difficult.

That's true Jack, but further North to Nepal the bananas will get more cold hardy right?

Theoretically, but still, they won't be hardy only to zone 9. There are tests I keep putting off with my Pahari Kela, but I guess it won't be as magical as basjoo. Well, we'll see.

A guy I worked for lived in Nepal in the 70's and said there were some edible seeded bananas there that he imported(big head ache he said) to the US. He said they were growing at about 4,000 ft, so there's got to be some naners at some higher elevations. I can't remember what town he was in.

In Nepal (depending on elevation) I would expect to find Sikkimensis & hybrids of sikki, thomsonii, Balbisiana & hybrids of it, Ensete Glaucum.

I would tend to take along some good file shots of these so that you can identify them (as they will be bigger than the specimens we're used to) and then see what else you find there.
as far as export is concerned, a poster tube and a postman is always worth a try.

You're referring to other plants besides bananas now right?

I'll see what I can find there, IF I find something. Taking good pictures if often half the work besides collecting seeds if possible.
