Default new to bananas new to fourm

Hi and thanks for all the great info. I have just recenty started growing bananas and have a few questions. I bought this plant about two weeks ago and it is growing great. about one new leaf every 5/6 days and when it fully emerges another leaf is already half grown. The issue im having is some of the leafs are starting to get dry and yellow (see pic) Is this too much sun for the newly planted banana? Is it too little water? Are there any signs that i should look for for and keep an eye out for say too little water or too much? any help is awesome.

ps i have another that gets some shade and it is doing better then this one.

Also how can i tell if they are getting enough water any way to tell by the soil?

Thanks

Bud

Judging by the hanging leaves it may be too hot for your banana. I know that we are having a hot spell here in CA and it is a little too much for one of my plants. If it was not getting enough water I would think that the new leaves would be fine and the older leaves would be drying out and turning yellow. My guess is that the heat and sun are a little too much for your young plant.

Welcome aboard, Bananabuddy. Check the Wiki. I recently posted some info there for the beginning banana grower.

Welcome Nanabudy, Maurelli Ensete do not like it really hot. The 2 I have were not to happy when we had a week of 100+ degree heat. I would recommnd increasing the water when it gets really hot to help compensate for the heat. By September these will be towering over you and you'll wonder how many other types of bananas you should start growing. If you like them big I would go with a Saba. Well I am getting carried away as you probably will in about a month.

The it may be to hot too much sun seem like it may be right a have another one of these and it gets mostly morning sun and is doing much better.

Do you think this will harden and survive? i don't want to transplant as i have a third one too that i moved and its not doing good at all.... But has started new growth so i am hopeful that it will recover!

Ps is it ok to mist during the hot days?????

Bud,

That all depends on your weather, although I would wager to say it will recover. Misting is ok but they really need to be watered for a minimum of 15 minutes on really hot days (95+ degrees). Mine were in hot dry conditions last year (Southeast drought) and they survived with a little help from illegal watering.

Hope this helps

Bud, i would not mist during hot days because it will surly burn the leafs if the sun is on them when misted, its ok if the sun is not directly on the plant, like Chris said, base water alot when its hot but not the leafs they will burn like a magnifying glass effect,
