New Pup?
Today I was changing the soil in my banana plant and down at the bottom of the roots was what looks like a new plant. It is green and pointed at top with a white bulb at the bottom with roots coming out of it. It is maybe 2 inches tall.
From what I understand about pups is that they grow out of the mother plant and this was completely separate. I placed a picture of it below: My questions are: 1) Is this a pup? 2) If not, what is it? 3) If so, is there any way to save it this early? |

Re: New Pup?
Had the same thing happen not too long ago. Stick it in a pot with the pointy part out...will take awhile but it should grow.

Re: New Pup?
Hi Buckles,
I am not surprised by what you found as 'naners are real tough and their efforts to survive don't stop surprising me. Last week I was walking near a place where a couple of Pisang Serendah aka Dwarf Cavendish were removed and saw a tiny plant on the ground. Upon closer look, it turned out to be a tiny piece of Corm which was broken off during the removal which grew into a pup. There was barely enough soil to cover it and yet it is growing. I call this a Corm 'Flake'. I took it home and had it potted. Just go easy on the water with your new pup. |

Re: New Pup?
Thank you very much. It was so bizarre.
I put the little guy in a small pot. It is great though. The mama has been through so much lately (gnats, cold) it is good to see a spring of hope. |
