Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
Are pisang raja and raja puri the same thing?
I got some suckers for Pisang Raja, FHIA-1 and FHIA-18 today. There are some other plants labeled as Raja Puri but they look exactly the same. Come to think of it, FHIA-1 and FHIA-18 don't look much different. |

Re: Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
Negative. Or at least they shouldn't be if they are correctly labeled.

Re: Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
Nick, like Jon say's, the real deal for each of these are very different. Both are AAB genomes, but Rajapuri is a dwarf (about 2 m p-stem) with small fruit, whereas Pisang Raja is a full sized plant (4 m p-stem) with bigger fruit. The true Pisang Raja is supposed to have have orangish flesh. Rajapuri, on the other hand has cream colored flesh, and to me, the flavor is very similar to dwarf Brazilian (based on limited "sampling"). Rajapuri and dwarf Brazilian plants are nearly indistinguishable to me, except that full grown Rajapuri are usually shorter than dwarf Brazilian.

Re: Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
pisang raja fruit tastes quite different, subacid, almost like a pineapple.

Re: Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
I wonder if he was talking about the right plant because to me, Raja Puri (as well as Brazilian and Dwarf Brazilian) has a bit of pineapple-like flavor. I have yet to try Pisang Raja, so I can't comment on its flavor.

Re: Pisang Raja vs. Raja Puri
I have both of mine developing fruit at this moment. This may be an old thread, but I find it right up my alley at the present time!

This is really good to know. My RajaPuri is about 5 ft at the pstem. It has fruited twice with small fingers but the fruit died before maturing. .... I've noticed a couple of other members state and shown pics of their RJ with fruit finger near normal/full size. ...This was making me drought my plants were labeled correctly. Thanks for the verification. ... So the other members reporting their 'RJ' as being much taller (8-9 ft or taller) and with larger fruit actually have Pisang Raja plants. Now to figure out why my RJ fruit keeps dying while the plant look good. I think the RJ is sensitive to South Georgia heat (near 100 deg F or more) or drought conditions. ... I should have another RJ bloom next spring. |
