Im planning on getting a few bananas around march-may. Ice cream, dwarf cavendish, williams hybrid, and thousand finger. Good choices or not? live in zone 7, reply with any suggested varieties i should get or if these are good. Thanks

Re: plans for spring
Hard choice for zone 7. Cavendish are very cold sensitive variety. I would go for Orinocos or Raja Puri. Good luck anyway

do you know of any good websites that sell raja puri or orinocos?
well i checked out green earth and they have dwarf orinocos and they are hardy to zone 7-11, so does this mean i can leave it in the ground with protection even during the winter? Last edited by LilRaverBoi : 02-28-2010 at 03:36 PM. Reason: Posts Merged |

Re: plans for spring
One of the places I purchase from is GreenEarth I do think Jimmmy (Org. Member) has both of those varieties and more. If Jimmmy (click on Classifieds he's listed there (his Ad)) has them he's the better deal in plant quality, price, shipping and customer service..Good Luck :^) but wait till it thaws out.. lol

Re: plans for spring
Orinoco and Rajapuri are great choices. When I lived in zone 6/7 I grew Ensetes. Since your main focus in a cooler climate is foliage, Ensete is a good choice since it grows very rapidly. I am growing Ensete glaucum right now and it may be a good candidate for your area since is is supposed to be able to take cold temperatures. It may survive winter with a bit of protection. And Ensetes get HUGE fast!
I have ordered from Stokes Tropicals-Specializes in Tropical Plants, Rare, Exotic Plants, Trees quite a bit, but they have limited selection right now and higher prices than usual. I really like Welcome to Going Bananas of Homestead, Florida! and have ordered from them several times. I have ordered from Tropical Plants and Palm Trees by The Banana Tree, Tropical Seeds, Banana trees, Banana Plant and have always recieved nice plants, but they are usually pretty small compared to plants from stokes. I have not ordered plants from GreenEarth, but have only read good reviews! |

Re: plans for spring
Jimmmy does have the varieties you are looking for. I went up there yesterday and picked up 9 more bananas. I purchased 15 from him three weeks ago and they are doing great. He is great to deal with.
