plants are really starting to grow now
With the change in the weather, higher humidity, cooler temperatures and some welcome rain, the bananas have put on a spurt of growth and are starting to pup too.
This one has shot up to 9ft of pseudostem and produced 3 pups - I must take the machete to those palms! From the front, the orphan from the lagoon is starting to grow at last, and has kept some colour too, and the apple is moving fast - look at the size of that leaf about to unfurl. Behind are 2 cavendish types that are doing well too. apple The ladyfinger has put out a new leaf 12 days after being planted - on the other side of the dog racetrack is the rulo which is also doing well. The icecream is also trying hard and doing well. Bless it's cotton socks as we say in England! The red banana is showing some lovely colour too (except that someone - probably me - couldn't keep their fingers off it) |

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
haha! We have big young dogs who like to play rough when it turns cool in the evening. An 110lb dog on the rampage does not improve a new little banana - see the racetrack between the two plants.
Japanese mastiff/rottweiler cross a foxy Dominican mixture The rebar also helps to keep the lawnmower off hidden pups when the grass gets a bit long. A bit of an eyesore until the plants get established and can stand up for themselves but better than coming out in the morning to find bits of banana spread around the place. |

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
I would recommend caps for the rebar ends that are sticking up. If someone falls on them they can be easily impaled. Even bending over to look at the plants could cause eye or head injuries...
They sell them at the local concrete supply store or you can fabricate your own. Nice plants, by the way (;^) |

I'm jealous, the only thing I find when I get to the bay at my buddies place is seaweed. I do bag it up for mulch though.

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
I just started a little more than a year ago trying to grow some bananas. I've all ways had some in my yard, but never tried different types. Any way the ones that I have bought and follow the basics there just doing ok .I put some in front of my one room, no special attention of any kind and they looking better and stronger than the ones I try to baby? I just confused?

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
James - they all grow at different rates and obviously some are much faster than others. But I agree with you - sometimes they seem to thrive with a bit of neglect!

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
Amazing growth for one year! One year here is only 4 1/2 months.

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
Hot and wet just steams them out of the ground I guess Patty. My ice cream has grown even faster and bigger - a monster like Audrey in The little shop of horrors!! lol! One of my favourite movies.
This is the orphan from the lagoon now after 18 months and this one was very slow to get away - possibly the salt water in the lagoon! But I have just cut 8 small pups off it and left 3 just to keep it within size - obviously a prolific pupper!! |

Re: plants are really starting to grow now
Cassie, your place is beautiful! So tropical there.
I'm looking at snow on the ground outside. Some places here just got 4 inches. My 2 IC are in big pots inside & barely growing...I think semi-dormant. Can't wait till Spring so I can plant inground & they will take off again. Next summer will be their 4th summer so I'm hoping for a flower then. Watch out for alligators by that lagoon!
