please help id nana plants on ebay..
Hi guys,
I was looking on ebay (the uk one)for banana plants and a seller has listed 6 different ones today. I hardly have any experience with all the different nanas and hope you can advise me whether they are true bananas. The zebrina one he offers doesnt look like other small zebrinas Ive seen. Can someone have a look for me and advise whether I should buy them or not. The sellers name is ....newforesthostas... thanks

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
hmmm interesting. He hasn't sold bananas / plants before.
To be honest the zebrina looks more like Velutina to me? That said the leaf shape is right and there do appear to be some dark patches on the photos so they may well be zebrina. Maybe have to buy one to find out for sure but i am running out of space |

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
thanks musa,
Did you see the zebrina listed by another seller, the plants are the same height and in the same size pot but they have definite markings on the leaves. But you're probably right and I'll have to buy one to find out......my luck it will be a peace plant or something...haha thanks for your help. its much appreciated.

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
I was looking at that particular sellers offerings. One other point, there was no picture of the actual plant you will receive - the picture published may be old or stock given the number of plants shown and only one or two on actual sale.
Now to the interesting bit. I contacted them and they stated that they grow over 6000 bananas a year in a greenhouse kept around 15°c. If that is the case they must be the main grower and distributer in the uk i would have thought ?? Note to myself Go visit !! There is another vendor who sells Zebrina who has a shop called "Bissetii" unfortunately they have had some bad feedback recently..... |

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
I too got a Zebrina from Bissetii and the packaging was awful. The worst packed banana I have ever bought. It needed most of the leaves removed as they were so badly damaged.
I too saw the bananas on ebay and I would say the Sakhalins must be TCd plants. If you are desperate for a true Sakhalin contact Andy Bateman at Mulu. Mine came from him before he moved back to his old site.

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
I got one from grub at the wisley meet so don't really need another.
If they do indeed grow around 6000 nanas a year then it might be an idea to visit them, never know what might turn up in those Tc trays. When do they open?lol |

Hi Kerrin
Where does your brother live? Are you going to get any nanas from newforesthostas? |

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
Hi Steve,
Hope you had a great new year! sorry to take so long to answer, been a bit hectic last few days. My brother lives in Chelmsfield near bromley/orpington. I'm not going to buy anything yet as I've decided to wait till he opens the nursery and I will spend a few days at Colins and go out to look at the plants then. ( I can get more in the car than by post...lol) Will let you know what they're like if I get there before you.

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
Hi Kerrin,
Happy New year to you I used to work in the Bromley area quite a bit a few years ago so know the area quite well.Although that was before I got bitten by the exotic plant bug so I have no idea if there are any decent nurseries nearby. Saying that you wouldn't be too far from the Palm centre which is allways good for a visit, just make sure you've plenty to spend and room in the car. Luckily each time I've been I've had the van. Then theres Architectural plants near Horsham, just down the M23. If you find any hidden gems let us know. Steve |

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
well, I did succumb and buy a couple of the Sakhalins,I'll let you know their condition, they we're going in the post today.
and even better the new forest is on my doorstep so I'll have first dibs on the TC trays. 6000 bananas a year sounds a great deal. that could only work if they have a solid distribution deal with a nursery/store chain. from a collector's ('hobbyist' for the colonials) point of view the market would be in much smaller numbers of the rarer varieties. Just a suggestion but perhaps the interested amateurs in the UK should pool some resources here and put some rare stuff into TC. I have been talking to others about this, especially with respect to the Yunnan species/varieties PM me if you're interested and maybe we'll try and take the idea forward

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
Me to, i bought a "Golden" zebrina which i have turned up nothing on so far but the grower said its taller lighter green leaves with lighter red on the leaves than the Zebrina/Sumatrana so i am looking foreward to seeing it.

Re: please help id nana plants on ebay..
I didn't even notice they were calling the 'golden' zebrina.
Might have to get one afterall. I'm sure theres still some room left in the greehouse Good idea about getting some of the rarer stuff Tc'd None of mine are really worth tcing though as you can get them easily enough. And the ones that are aren't anywhere big enough yet. |
