Default Potting Pups.....

Hey everyone,

Have a quick question. Last week I received a California Gold Pup, about 16" Pstem, and put it in a 10 gallon pot. My question is, how long should I keep it in shade for before moving it to full sun. I am in Southern California, 10A. The planting instructions that came with it said I should have it in a warm shady area for about a week. This came from Jeff Earl.

If it was me I would leave it shaded until it starts putting out new growth.

Thanks, that's what I figured, however was unsure. It does have a new leaf slowly coming up, but it looks to be just the tip, about and inch long, and about twice the thickness of a pier of hair, where as my dwarf Jamaican red is obvious when a new leaf is coming up. Also, how long until I should fertilize with banana fuel?

I would wait until it's putting on new growth

Should new pups be put in pots larger than a one gallon if you are planning for them to be put into the ground?

Once a TC pup fills a 1gal. pot it's plenty big to plant in ground

Ditto. I'd wait until it had put out an entire new leaf. I'm that's not really necessary, but it is playing it safe by ensuring the plant has a good, healthy, functioning root system. Commercial growers don't bother with any of this, from what I can tell. They harvest suckers and plant them straight into the ground and full sun. Of course, they're doing that in the tropics, not So Cal.
