Hi,

yesterday I got a reply from the agricultural ministery of Sao Paulo. I would ship my basjoo pups to Brazil to Lucianópolis from Germany. Also I would order Saba, Praying Hands, Thousand Fingers, Ice Cream and African Rhinohorn from Agristarts and from one banana nursery in Thailand to ship to Brazil. But it's not allowed to ship banana plants and pups from Germany, Thailand and the U.S.A. Probably because of the risk of the banana diseases, Brazil want to protect its banana plantations against diseases from Germany, U.S.A. and Thailand, e. g. against Black Sigatoka, Yellow Sigatoka, nematodes and Panama disease.

But I cannot give up until I have Musa basjoo in Lucianópolis in Brazil in my yard to cross them with sikkimensis, xishuangbannaensis, balbisiana and other Musa species and diploide fruit bananas. Also my friend, he is biologist from Vienna, wants to triploidize the basjoo, sikkimensis and xishuangbannaensis to get hardy fruit bananas which do have edible seedless fruits, also Musa velutina must be triploidized to get seedless edible fruits.

Please help me and look for the sources of Musa basjoo in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina) and Uruguay! Thanks in the advance!

Also I already wrote lorax from Bolivia (former in Ecuador) one PN. I hope, he will help me to get basjoos to Brazil.

Dwarf Cavendish I will not ship to Brazil because the Nanica is very similar to Dwarf Cavendish, probably is the name "Nanica" even one alias name for "Dwarf Cavendish". I saw plants with fruits of Nanica in Brazil, without differences from Dwarf Cavendish on Tenerife! Also there is a red banana in Brazil, in the every case I will get pups of this red banana for my yard from Frutas Raras! This major problem is that Frutas Raras does not offer Musa basjoo but it offers 14 banana varietes, all of the banana varietes I will buy at Frutas Raras for my yard in Brazil, Frutas Raras is in Brazil! My friend Jürgen and I plan to work together with Frutas Raras, perhaps we will get visa to live in Brazil forever.

Please help me and try to google sources of Musa basjoo in South America and Brazil in Spanish, English and Portuguese! And try to contact banana friends in Brazil and other countries in South America and reguest them for basjoo pups for me to Brazil. Please write me one email (joachim.jaeck@yahoo.com.br) or PN.

Lorax of Ecuador, formerly of Bolivia. I'll ask about Basjoo next time I'm at the Quito Botanical Gardens. Mine (which I obtained there) failed due to my higher elevation. You should have no such problems in Brazil. If I can get them, I'll definitely ship them to you. If not, Ecuador may have looser plant importation rules than Brazil, however I doubt it when it comes to bananas, since they're a major part of our economy and importing Panama disease or one of the Sigatokas would be disastrous to us.

this is an idea, I will fax to several universities in Brazil to ask for sources and pups from basjoo. I will tell them that I need basjoo to try to breed new hardy fruit bananas for frost endangered areas in Southern Brazil, e. g. in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and for the U.S. and Europe, too. But it's will be only way from Brazil to U.S. and Europe, and never from the U.S. and Europe to Brazil, as long as the prohibition law to import new banana varieties to Brazil from the U.S., Germany and Thailand does exist. It's not okay that no banana pups from Germany may not enter Brasil because no Black Sigatoka, Yellow Sigatoka and Panama Disease do exist in Germany, too cold climate for these banana diseases, but I understand more the prohibition for Thailand and the U.S., because these countries have warm climate in many parts, warm enough for banana diseases. I will never give up until I do have basjoo in my yard in Lucianópolis. Then I will propagate at first.

@lorax, thank you, that you will help me! You will ask the botanical garden for some pups of Musa basjoo to ship them to Lucianópolis to Antonio, and already know his address by my PN. I will let know his daughter Leda tomorrow, she lives with me in Hamburg, she is my guest daughter. When you send a packet to Lucianópolis to Antonio, then let know him that the pups are for me!

Now I spoke with Leda. She told that is a risk to ship seed to Brazil, you can have good luck and bad luck, this is the same like one fare dodger, the strict importation laws of Brazil are bad for the country Brazil and its economy and problematic for genpools. E. g. one important species exincts in Brazil because of one new disease and another species which is resistant against the new disease and crossable with the exinct species in Brazil, that Brazil gets big problems with food and with the economy. Prohibits can be detrimental for the economy and agriculture and thwart the research in breeding. And most of the nurseries in Brazil have only small sortiments of bananas because of this prohibition of banana plant and seed importation, even the large like Dierberger. Only Raras Frutas has 14 banana varieties, I will get all of them, Frutas Raras is one of the importantest for me. Dierberger and Frutas Raras complain about this prohibition of banana plant and seed importation in their emails to me. Now I will try to get different important hardy bananas over the botanical gardens and universities in Brazil. I think, I will get Musa basjoo from the botanical gardens of Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Blumenau, Novo Hamburgo etc. Also sikkimensis, itinerans and others.

But in the future will change this. Brazil and other Southamerican countries have now decided a union like EU and AU in the future. Then it's possible that the border controls between the countries in South America will be abolished like the border controls between the states in the EU (Schengian Agreement, Schengener Abkommen), you will go from France to Germany and nobody controls you! Even you go from Germany to Poland and nobody controls you at the border between Germany and Poland. But if you leave the EU to go to e. g. Russia or Belorussia or Brazil, then you will be controlled and have to show your passport and visum and have to show permits for export and import if you do export or import plants and seeds, but not between the countries of the EU. In the future you will be not controlled at the border between Bolivia and Brazil anymore, and if you leave Brazil to go to Argentina, you will not be controlled anymore in the future in the case of the South American Union. Even the U.S.A. plans one union with Canada and Mexico, the North American Union. The South American Union is one hope for the nurseries and collectors of banana species to get more and more banana species to Brazil.

good news from Brazil!!! Yesterday I found by Google http://www.magistra.ufrb.edu.br/publ...7%20-%2010.pdf I found even Musa basjoo, itinerans, sikkimensis and balbisiana on this paper! There is an address. I wrote immediately one letter to there to ask for pups, seeds and sources from Musa basjoo and other hardy bananas in Brazil. I think, they will grow them for me by micropropagation. Also I asked for Ice Cream, Thousand Fingers, African Rhinohorn, Saba and Praying Hands. I also need one Brazilian variety which tastes like Ice Cream and want to deliver harvests to the new hotel in Lucianópolis and gourmet restaurants in Brazil in the future. I also asked for the larger sources of bananas in Brazil, with much larger sortiments of musas than Frutas Raras. So I will compensate the prohibition of import for bananas to Brazil and get the importantest banana species for my breeding hardy fruit banana project with Musa basjoo.

Accidentaly the Agricultural Ministery of Sao Paulo gave me a tip about the very large genetic bank for bananas in Brazil in the state Bahia. The same address!!! I have already wrote a letter there, I told about this the lady of the Agriculture Ministery and said her much thanks!

now I found a list about Brazilian botanical gardens, see jd.botânico Now I emailed to 14 botanical gardens in Brazil to ask about seeds, pups and sources of Musa basjoo, sikkimensis, itinerans and other bananas in Brazil.

You will see, that my chance to get pups of Musa basjoo and other banana species and cultivars which are hardy and rare will increase. To total 14 botanical gardens and Embrapa together I emailed and wrote.

Joachim, if you are serious about your project you should contact a germplasm distributor. They have guaranteed disease-free material, and ship all over the world. They also include documents for the germplasm to ensure recipient-country it's disease-free.

I usually talk to Kathy at Sunshine, but Ashley at Agristarts is good too. They both have websites too if you do a search for Sunshine Horticulture or Agristarts, they're both in Apopka Florida.
