was just wondering if u can cut a small pup off the main corm, before it has its own roots, and root it in water...

Hi Pony,

If you know, that it has no roots, then you also must have seen the corm. If it is at least the
size of a walnut, stick it into a pot with normal soil mix. Keep the growing environment as closely
resembling the one it came from as possible. No special care to develop roots necessary
the plant knows how to do that.

If the corm is still too small leave it attached to "mum", until the PS is at least 10 inches high
(the plant overall at least twice that), then do as above.

I tried that and got lucky. Last fall I had some tiny pups, almost sprouts. Potted them in the fall, watched them and tried to keep them warm. One gave up the ghost and the other I kept clipping the dead off until nothing practically remained and it pulled through. It's still pretty small after a year, about 1.5 feet.

Yeah Tim,

it is a bit like having a premature baby. With a lot of good care, it will probably pull through,
but it is preferable to let it come to full term.

Actually I am glad you said that, because nothing is absolute and that goes for the right and
wrong treatment of bananas as well.

Re. your post In the other thread, it sounds to me, that you want to bring the pup inside, while leaving
the “mum” outside or winter it some other way. Whatever you do with the mother plant, leave the pup
attached. Unless it is big enough as I outlined below, it will survive, if the mother will. You can always
separate it in spring.

I have taked four suckers off already and all died. There is hardly any root base when i do so. I take a trowel and cut down along the base of the crom and pull the smaller plant out. I then place these in moist soil in the sun. I'm thinking maybe it's too much sun for their little root systems, or I need to dig around the little ones better. I was having the same problem and found something that helps at my hardwarestore. it makes it easy for people like us
