So Cal fires/wind
Came home the other night to a house with no power and a bunch of fallen banana trees. We have had some hurricane force wind gusts over 100 mph. Here in West LA the wind gusts were around 60-80 mph. How are you other So Cal folks doing? I know some of you are out where the winds really blow.
Here is how much fruit I've lost so far. I doubt any of these will ripen but you never know. |

Mitchel
I had some trouble out by me with my Banana's in my backyard. My Java Ice Cream & Hawaiian Apple,Sweethearts leaves are shredded very badly. We had some really strong winds blowing where I live also with gust blowing about 100mph with steady winds blowin at 50-80.I did not have any fruit like yours did and hope yours ripen with no problems.I hope everyone else out here in California are doing ok with there banana's in there backyard.I will post some pictures later.I hope you have a full recovery after these winds stop blowin out here. Mitch

Re: So Cal fires/wind
In comparison to what is going on elsewhere in Cali I feel very fortunate to only have a few trees down here. I have several friends who own homes in Malibu, Lake Arrowhead, Santa Clarita and in San Diego. At this point they have all been evacuated.
Although we have been spared from the smoke I got this picture late yesterday afternoon from my front yard looking towards Malibu. I thought the sign with the smoke was fitting. |

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Oh, Mitchel, I'm sorry! How awful! I've had some broken leaves, and was very concerned about my fruit. We lost power four times over the weekend.
I feel so bad for all of those people in the fire areas. I have a friend in Canyon Country that is ready to evacuate if necessary. The smoke and ash are really doing a number on my asthma. Jon, I hope you're no where near the fires down there. |

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Here is the fire location map. If you click on the fires you'll get more detailed info. Good luck.

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Thanks so much, Mitchell! Your site led me to this one. http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/.... great info.
Sorry for your trees Looks like my house is ok for now, the fire is north but, unfortunately, moving south. It's going to be another long night.....Sometimes for Hurricanes, sometimes for fires! Thanks to all and Prayers to all, Margie |

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Mitchel, DO NOT throw any bananas away. Many more will ripe than you think. My first Kru were blown off 6 weeks after the last hand formed, and laid in my yard for 3 months, but the ripened.
We have acutally had little or no wind at my location till about 3:00 this afternoon, and now they are strong and very gusty. Two Brazilian and 2 Manzano bit the dust (no fruit hanging on them, so they are definitely not wind tolerant). In contrast, Goldfinger, Praying hands, Misi Luki, Sweetheart, and others, all with fruit, are holding their own. The winds to the north and/or east have been horrendous. I grew up In woodland Hills and Mission Hills, and remember seasons when the Santa Ana winds were 40-50 plus mph night and day for 3-4 days; when every leaf off of every tree was plastered up against a fence, and there wasn't any loose dirt ro dust anywhere for miles.

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Bch GrL my sister-in-law was evacuated last night in Canyon Country, and she lives at Linda Vista & Sierra Hwy and the fire did not make it that way because the wind shifted around the mountain.I hope the fire missed your house, and is ok.When I got home from work today I watched the smoke again fill the valley I live in, and could not see much because the smoke is coming from Stevenson Ranch Fire over the mountains into ventura county where I live.I went out to take some pics but my camera is broken, and I only wish and hope I can show you guys my damage done to my banana's.Hope all of you dont lose anymore banana's from the wind storm we are having. The Indians years ago called where I live "Valley Of the Wind's".
Jon you are so right about living in the SFV when we would have the winds blow night and day for 3 to 4 days straight, and the trees in the neighborhood would lose all there leaves.I lived in Northridge at the west end of the valley near Porter Ranch and the wind would just howl for days it sucked so much.Anyway I hope you are not close to any fires. Take care of your banana's So Cal Banana Growers, Mitch

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Boy, I've been oblivious to this. I don't watch TV (no time, too much junk) and didn't know of the problems down there. Up here in NorCal in the delta my biggest risk is flooding.
I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers! |

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Mitchel, sorry to hear about your plants. Your fruit should ripen, my neighbors sister gave us some recently and they ripened just fine inside. I feel bad for all of those dealing with the fires. The sky here is orange and ash is all over showing up on the cars.

Re: So Cal fires/wind
Mitchel-Sorry to hear about your plants. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose them with fruit on them but maybe they will ripen. I have also seen bunches that I thought would never ripen actually make it. By the way, is that a Red Iholene in the picture?
On a separate note, my thoughts and prayers go out to all dealing with the devastating fires in California. |
