Spider invasion
Does anyone have a problem with to many spiders living and breeding in the petiole canals of their banana plants? I get these medium sized dark brown spiders that live In there and make hundreds of little babies. I don't have anything against spiders but they are becoming a nuisance by literally covering my plants with webs that trap dirt and leaves and such making an eyesore not to mention climbing on me and scaring the @rap out of me when I trim the old leaves. I grow all organically so I guess they feel at home but I need to find a way to drastically reduce their population without using poison. Any ideas? Btw it's too late in the season for Praying Mantis eggs.

Re: Spider invasion
I had these little @#%&* on my mango, they got a close look at my sole. Hosing down my plants helps, I'm with you though, no poisons if I can help it, esp. not on edibles.

Re: Spider invasion
I've got loads of spiders that run around on the ground, haven't got a lot of webs in the plants so they don't bother me . I'm with you guys on avoiding poisons, I've learned to deal with a lot of critters rather than poison my family, friends, neighbors, etc... I notice mocking birds making their rounds through the beds daily, so I'm sure they help keep the population of critters down. Attracting predatory birds to your yard could be free help!

Re: Spider invasion
YIKES!!!!!!
Ya'll have so many huge bananas it could be a chore to clean them up.. I have just a few spiders.. I use a paint brush to get rid of the webs when they start building.. Just want them to no they need to move on... We are organic as well..Now if you walk across the yard ...Big giant webs everywhere...or better yet take a ride out on the 4-wheeler..I would be the one flailing around .. Gives me hate shivers just thinking about it...EEEWWW!!!! Kylie |

Re: Spider invasion
I also try to go organic as much as possible. I have lots of Black Widows in my bananas and everywhere else. The Mud Dobbers (sp.) used to control them well, but the people who moved in around us thought all insects were bad, and sprayed everything in sight. We used to have tons of Praying Mantis and Ladybugs, but I haven't seen but maybe one ladybug this year.
I know that's no help, but at least I could vent a bit. |
