Spider Mites on Banana plants
I need some photos of spider mites on banana plants, what it looks like, the effects of them.
How does one treat them? trying to end a heated discussion. Pictures of heavy infestation and light infestation would be great! Thanks

Re: Spider Mites on Banana plants
You can Google photos of them, they are not easy to see with bare eyes. They make a Web type cover on plants. I have no idea if they go for banana plants. I would think only on small tender plants. Can't imagine them on a large banana plant that is hardened off outside but maybe.
To treat them you could do the usual spray like neem etc. But to really eradicate them and keep them in check predator Californicus or other predator mites are available. The predator mites do work and will keep bad mites in check for the long run. They are a good addition if you grow a lot of stuff and have mite issues. They completely cleared up persea mites I had on my avocado grove. Last edited by Spaugh : 05-04-2018 at 12:15 AM. |

Re: Spider Mites on Banana plants
We've googled them but not many banana plant specific infections were found. This person says he sees the mites all over his plant but there's no webbing.

Re: Spider Mites on Banana plants
Maybe I can help you. I just cut the leaves of infested bananas. This year it seems to infect almost all of them.
May I ask you what do you need it for? |

Re: Spider Mites on Banana plants
Yes, webbing on the underside of the leaves.
Most activity is on the underside of the leaf or the tender shoots of any host plant. The leaf will actually curl somewhat as the infestation progresses. And leaf edges will brown and turn dull or get very shiny from the waste I suspect. Once my Brugmansias leaf out I am sure to have some activity on those. I had a good infestation on lasiocarpas a few months back. I have seen them travel in single file(about 15 feet of deck rail) going from plant to plant and they seem to be pretty mobile. Activity will increase for me when it heats up a bit (July August) or when a plant is under lights indoors. .This plant had mites while indoors . AeAe leaf In March by Hostafarian, on Flickr .Spidermites on some lasiocarpa. The mites were not noticed for about 30 days and the did some damage. What color are the mites anyway? White or red?

There is a red version of this critter with the same characteristics. Google images has some good photos of heavy infestations of both colored mites. Seems these fellas are relentless. |
