Default Spiders and raccoons

I know that spiders are "beneficial" insects but they scare me to death expecially the big banana spiders. Is there anything I can do to control them easily? My other occasional problem is raccoons. As you can see from my album I have dwarf varieties so they are easy picking for raccoons. Is there anything short of fencing off my bananas with an electric fence to keep them out?

NN

Take a ride north to Ericson and find out what they do. I found out about the multitude of critters that inhabit the mangoes and their bananas -- unbelievable. And still no damage - except for the 4 footed kind of course. Check it out. They helped me keep my Duncan mango alive.

Purchase a motion sensor that makes a noise when the beam of light is interupted!!!anything of that sort should work.

I have used an electric fence for small animals, with great success. If critters get a taste of ripe bananas, nothing short of an electric fence will deter them. I always try to remove bananas at first sign of ripeness for that reason! And remove anything else from the area that they may desire( fresh water, other food source, shelter, etc.). I no longer use the electric fence, and there are plenty of racoons and squirrels in my area, but they haven't figured out how good the bananas are. Spiders are welcome here!

Nothing unnerves me more than a big Banana Spider, except maybe a snake. I discovered one of those while I was deflowering a banana about a week ago.

Oh man, you want to trade tarantula stories? I had one drop on me the other day when I was pruning the ugly leaves off my plantains. Freaked me out so bad I almost fell off the ladder.

I know they won't hurt me, it's the surprise of having one land on your head....

My worst snake story is almost stepping on a Coral snake while hiking in the forest. That doesn't give me half the heebidy-jeebidies of the big spiders, though.

Apparently the Pythons are making there way out of the Everglades, so I am awaiting the day that I go out to my patch and some 10' snake tries to strangle me. I think if I had a tarantula fall on my head though I might actually have to spray the trees.
