Nice Tony! Looks like you'll have some for X-Mas too! Hope we have a mild winter, I have quite a few bunches that need more time as well.

Tony:
Beautiful looking bananas. What area are you located in San Diego?
I was there for 4 days last weekend and all I can see were houses with small yard. I also went to Kubey's Flea market Sunday and I was hoping to see Richard there. There were many kinds of tropical plants for sale.

Hey Benny
I am right above Qualcom stadium south side. Did you pick up any banana plants at the swap meet?

Wow...great job! I'm jealous of all you people that live in warm enough places to get bananas to fruit easily. It's quite the challenge to get fruit in zone 5 or 6....trust me! Great pics though! Thanks for sharing....and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I don't think I'd even try to grow bananas in z 5-6 without a large heated greenhouse. You couldn't pay me enough to drag large plants under the house each winter like Frank does. Nope, no way!

Eh, it's not so bad! Hard work makes us appreciate our achievements more! I don't wanna live a banana-less existence anyway...regardless of whether I'm in zone 10 or zone 3!

Right on, man. You go, dude. I can appreciate what you have to go through. I don't know if you know a Don Bryan over at Dave's Garden, but he is in Kansas and has an awesome collection, and he puts his under his house each winter. It is a labor of love. I should invite him to come over here.

Tony, your fruit and flowers are so impressive. Thank you so much for posting these pictures. It gives me something to enjoy while I wait for my tiny babies to get big like yours.

No. I was tempted to buy large papaya plant and a mango though but I changed my mind knowing that they are not going to grow in my area.
I have bananas planted in my yard right up to my ears. Like today, I just transferred 9 DC pups in pots. And this came from one mom in one wine barrel pot. I left 2 nice pups for the mom. My next one that I need to transfer is my sweetheart. There's quiet a few too in that wine barrel. And I just cut 3 pups from my grand nain because it is getting overcrowded. I've been planting my bananas at 3 feet distance thinking that I was able to fruit a banana in a wine barrel so why not on the ground. I am breaking all the rules.

Benny

Benny how is that spacing working out for you? I'm curious to know my plants only have the room at there roots i give them as my soil is so hard packed they cant go beyond the initial hole diameter its vary smiler to growing in a pot and or close spacing whats your soil like? how do you over come the root competition?

I forget all the types he has now. He told me once, but I can't remember. He has a remarkable jungle that he greenhouses all winter and puts out in the spring. You'd never know you were in Kansas by looking at his backyard.

I'll go ask him to join us here, but I know he is super busy. I don't know if you can see this thread, but here is one of his threads: Central Midwest Gardening: Walking in the rain forest of Kansas!
