Time lapse infloresence video
Over the last few days I made a time lapse video of my Musa 'Rose' setting its female flowers. Also in the video you will see hand pollination for my breeding project. Next I will do a few hands of male flowers as well.
PS- you can also see the new leaf on the pup growing with it as well. Enjoy!

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
That has got to be one of the neatest things I've ever seen on this site.
Are you crossing it with something you might hope to keep the offspring outside in the winter?

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
That's really awesome, Gabe!
What kind of setup did you use for that series of photos?

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear you enjoy it.
The pollen is from Musa laterita (I volunteer at the Denver Botanic Gardens where this plant is always flowering profusely), this being one of many crosses to be done in my quest to create intermediate forms of Rhodochlamys bananas and edible bananas. This is the 3rd cross performed for my project the first two being M. laterita x M. 'Rose' (119 seeds harvested) and M. 'Lavender Beauty' x M. 'Rose' (1 seed harvested), this one is M. 'Rose' x M. laterita (when looking at hybrid names, ladies are first). I have a MacBook with the built in camera, and if you have one too, you can use iMovie to record movies using the built in camera. They put in a very easy to use tool to create time lapse movies as well. I'm too lazy to work out the normal frame rate for a movie in iMovie, but I set mine to save 1 picture for every 2000 frames seen, and that came out to about 1 picture every 2.5min or so. The reason there is weird breaks and camera angle changes is because I actually wanted to use my computer sometimes and didn't always set it up right again, but other then that its pretty much one continuous shot.

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
I've a MacBook too but didn't realize it did that. Sweet!
I need to read manuals more often and find out what I'm missing out on And congrats with your success so far on the breeding project. That sounds quite interesting!

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
This is somewhat off topic...but highly useful and fun for plant geeks with MacBooks.
step 1: open iMovie step 2: toggle mode from edit to capture and click on "time lapse" step 3: click on "capture 1 frame for every..." and enter whatever you want, as mentioned earlier I used 2000, that took one picture every few minutes but you can set it to whatever you want. click ok. step 4: click "record with iSight" and wait as long as you want. when you're done, click "record with iSight" again and there ya go, you have an awesome time lapse movie.

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
perfect!
Thanks for that tutorial Gabe, I'm gonna have some fun with that. Now I need a waterproof case for the MacBook because most of the fun I could have with that is outside. Well, there's always my reef aquarium that I could do some neat time lapsing with Thanks again for taking the time to show us how it's done

Re: Time lapse infloresence video
I have not harvested the fruit yet, I will see if it even set any seed when I return home this December.
