Default Too late to separate pups?

Hi

Is it too late in the season to separate and dig up pups?
It has has turned into summer quite early here in Dallas with temps in the 90s every day and this weekend it can reach 100...

Thanks

As far as I know, any time is OK for separating pups - as long as they have good roots & are big enough. Too small, they won't have enough roots.

Yeah, if they're big enough and you can separate them with enough roots (like Patty said) I see no problem with it. It might be more difficult to work through transitional stages (transplant/separation shock) though. I'd consider moving them to a partially shady area or into pots first (in a shady location) first to help out with that. Otherwise, yes, 100 degrees and full sun might be a bit much right now for newly separated pups.

It might be a good idea to wait till fall and separate them then....when it's not so sunny/intense. I won't say you CAN'T do it now, but it might be easier on them (and have better success) during other times of the year. If you are really adamant about it, I'd transplant the pups to pots in shady locations first....then gradually get them going, then acclimatize them to full sun gradually...then plant them in the ground again. That's my two copper Lincolns anyway.

Oh, and keep in mind....the pups of a plant don't negatively affect the main plant in any way. Only if the main plant is flowering/developing fruit and has many pups on there will you notice any significant decrease in performance/development. You're probably just fine leaving things growing as-is for now, IMO. Please post pics or give additional information if you can!

I just separated some the other day. Just make sure they don't get to dried out.

It''s not summer yet so, it's definately not to late. Give them some time in a pot to recover and grow some roots for maybe a week or two. Then transition to a more sunny location, then put them where you planned. :^)
