Default Trimming roots while potting up

I'm repotting a 6 foot Orinoco and the roots are huge. They've wrap around the bottom so I need to cut them back because even going to a larger pot I can;t spread them all out.

How close to the corm can I cut them back ?

If your putting it in the ground I'd dig trenches for every one out from where your going to put it. Your going to need the stability those roots provide for a 6ft'er. If you have to; I'd trim as little as possible! :^)

I have never trimmed roots unless they looked like they were rotting.

The only time that I have trimmed roots have been if a plant is root bound pretty bad, and usually very little that I trim just enough to untangle them

Yeah, I wouldn't trim off any roots. It is just going to stress the plant more and make the transplant much harder on it. Might even cause the plant to go into shock and lose some leaves. Honestly, when I transplant my bananas, I don't even TOUCH the roots and they always spring back perfectly without any problems. Most of the stories I hear about people messing with the roots result in stressful transplants and issues.
