Re: Trip to San Diego this weekend
I don't know about any nurseries with AeAe but when I was down that way I stopped in Carlsbad (which is on the way) at the Flower Fields The Flower Fields. I don't think they are open now to the public, but I do know at the base of them was a very nice nursery where I got myself a nice 5ft dwarf brazillian for fifteen bucks (they were half off) but they had a nice selection inside of Bromlieads, they also had some nice Japanese Maples, and interesting grafted citrus trees. They are a bit expensive, but I thought it was a nice stop all in all.

Re: Trip to San Diego this weekend
No Ae Ae, but well worth a stop to check out a large assortment of bananas (and figs), if Jon is available: Encanto Farms Nursery
If you're looking for some tropical fruiting plants, you should drop by Ong Nursery in northern San Diego. Exotica Nursery also has some interesting things, but many are seedlings even where grafted trees are more suitable. |

Re: Trip to San Diego this weekend
Hmm ... I've never written about "fruit nursery tour of San Diego"!
I'll second Harvey's comment about Exotica. The owner Steve Spangler has introduced many new plants to fruit growers in the U.S. He is also a kind person and very knowledgable concerning fruiting plants. His nursery is eclectic and worth viewing (like a trip to the zoo) but many plants are mislabeled and some are of questionable health. A few blocks away is Clausen's Nursery -- an excellent place to buy plants. I would call ahead for availability. Another place to call is Green Thumb in San Marcos, CA (in San Diego county). They have a limited, but highly varied selection. City Farmers nursery is east of downtown and has possibly been picked over by now, but it is worth visiting anyway. There are several nurseries named Anderson, Andersen, etc. The world famous Walter Andersen nurseries have two locations: one near "old town" San Diego and the other in Poway -- about a 25 minute drive from downtown in moderate traffic. The Poway location is much larger (5 acres) and the full-time staff (not the part-time) is very knowledgeable. You'll have to call Ong's for an appointment. You can get the number from Jon (pitangadiego) -- and it would be criminal not to visit him. If you do go into the "northern" part of the county to Poway, etc. you are certainly welcome to stop by here. I'll be out Saturday morning at a Citrus Pest Management seminar at the Encinitas Library.
