Unofficial chapter meeting!
We had an unofficial North/South California meeting of the International Banana Society at Joe Real's house in Davis, California this evening. Joe Real cooked us a Filopino dinner and we ate 'Kandrian' bananas that Jon picked this morning.

I was just along for the ride, though I've got as much enthusiasm as anybody right now (I've added 22 cultivars in the past 2 months). It was fun to hear Jon poke at fun with Joe, teasing him to see if he had figured out a way to graft a banana yet! LOL

Kylie, I think the Brown Act requires that we post a public notice of our meeting at least 3 days in advance for an "official" meeting.
 Jon wished me luck with the 'Ae Ae' I received from another friend yesterday but warned me that it's the only banana that has croaked on him. I guess that is a kind way to tell me that my odds are less than 1 in 100! Yikes! On the other hand, he has too any plants to provide any special protection or care. I think I may be sleeping with mine this winter! LOL

Sounds like you guys had fun! Maybe we should consider doing one at some point for the TX/LA area. I think we have several members in these two states! It would really be interesting to do a national one and move it around each year! I know that would be a lot of work, though. How long has this site been around anyhow, and is it really the official International Banana Society or do we just call it that?

The genesis of the trip was a visit to the USDA/UC Davis Germplasm collection of figs. (http://figs4fun.com, click the forum where the pictures will be in the near future). I have other passions besides bananas. as I am sure most people do. I had requested an audience and tour of Joe's grafting extravaganza (something in the neighborhood of 350 cultivars of plums, peaches, apricots, citrus, quince, etc grafted on 15-20 trees), and ended up staying with him and his very sweet wife, and three children. Unbeknownst to Joe was an inquiry by Harvey about some additional banana cultivars for his collection, and I noticed his proximity to Davis, and then we discovered our mutual connection in Joe.
Fabulous time at Joes, and near heavenly time at USDA Wolfskill Repository. Fresh Kanderian bananas and ginger-lemongrass wine. Any east coast chapter meetong and any in Texas have a high standard to meet. Thanx Joe.
