Blood Banana is Musa acuminata subsp. zebrina, but your plants does not look like that. Often times the plants are mislabeled at Lowes and Home Depot type stores anyways. The fact that its variegated does not help at all in its ID, its just a sport for tissue culture. It is also very young, which always makes it hard/impossible to ID just by looking at it, you will have to just wait until it flowers one day to know for sure what it is.

I'll bet that it's 'margarita'. I have several that look like that.

I have seen just a few bananas at Lowes this year:Orinoco, dwarf Orinoco, Blood rojo, Basjoo, and Dwarf Cavendish.

That said, this was mislabeled Orinoco:

If this is possible, then margarita is possible.

Lowes has had huge quantites of 'Siam Ruby' in this year, mislabeled as Musa zebrina. I'll bet that's what you've got, only the yellow form. And variegated too!

I'll bet it's been either malnurished or had a little to much fertilizer. I have found this happens to my Ice Cream from time to time. I don't think Lowes or Home Depot purchased any Margaritas this year.

Sheesh, all of my Siams are labeled "Margarita", I guess what I have are the green form.

I never noticed before, so my margarita are actually green Siams
Sure wish people would improve their labeling practises. Perhaps these were the only tags they had on hand
I hate to admit it, but I've sold a lot of these and they most likely had the wrong tag as well. I just took for granted that they were labeled properly.

Are your "margaritas" / Siams coming reliably half and half as in the first photo or do they switch? I've heard that Siam pups can be much different from the parent but mine has not pupped yet, so...

I have a Siam which is nearly totally red but with green markings (which I do like) and a pair of Margaritas which are totally green (which I do like) but I'd love one that was half green and half red.

I'm not 100% sure yet. I did have a few to start pushing all green or all red leaves, but some of those pushed 50/50's later on. I wouldn't guarantee that they would be reliable.

Hey Chris, I would agree with you that Lowes or HD didn't purchase anything labeled as 'Margarita' this year. Lowes, however, did purchase a bunch of 'Siam Ruby' bananas and mislabel them as Musa zebrina. As you may or may not know, 'Margarita' is just the name they gave to the green form of 'Siam Ruby', which was an accident from tissue culture.

It's not any variegation to write home about, and it probably isn't stable, but it is still variegation. I have an Ensete ventricosum with this type of variegation on it that burns horrible in the sun on the white parts, and also crinkles on the white parts. Who wants that? Well...I still have it, LOL! Just because it has some variegation in it, I can't seem to let it die.

Just curious... how does one find out exactly what Lowes and Home Depot buys?

The Lowes around us this year havent had any bananas at all!
We found this at a greenhouse that got bought out over the winter, as you can see the pups on right side of photo they are colored different than mom!

The green leaves(on left) the greenhouse owner thinks are Truly Tiny.
