Veinte Cohol Flowering
I have been and still am timing the growth and production of my Veinte Cohols. I have 4 VC blooming right now. I am using my largest VC for this thread.
For me it seems VC grow very slowly while they are small (under 4'). When they hit 4'-5' they really take off and add size fast. I also notice they seem to do better with a little higher nitrogen than my other varieties. 3/21/2016 - Planted 4 VC pups overwintered in my small greenhouse from last year. At planting they were about 3' pups. 7/25/2016 - Flower! Plant height is about 7' or a little more. 7/27/2016 - Large flower with lots of fingers. 8/12/2016 - 8 hands. First hand has 29 fingers!! 8/23/2016 - Plumping a little. Can't wait to see how fast they ripen.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
I will! I have read mixed reviews on taste. I'm very excited to taste them and will share as soon as they get ripe.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
I've also read negative reviews about the taste, but it seems worth trying since it does fruit fast. Hope they taste good for you.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
Congrats! You'll have a ton of small bananas on your hands soon!
I also observed the rapid increase in growth on my 4' tall VC plant in the past few weeks. I assumed that it might be weather related but perhaps that isn't the case. We had decent rainfall and the temperature is starting to drop into the 50s/60s at night again. I didn't notice much growth during the heat of summer. Erik G |

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
Update: Today I cut the VC bunch pictured as well as a second bunch that was ripe.
The older VC flower to harvest time was 58 days. It weighed 14lbs. The Larger VC and one pictured flower to harvest time was 52 days. Amazing. It weighed 19 lbs. Total harvest was 19 hands and 283 fingers. I tried a couple they were good but still a little green.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
Update: After the bananas ripening over the past few days. I've tried them at several stages of ripening.
Yellow/green: firm texture and extremely tart almost sour. Hard to peel. Peel sticks to the fruit. Full yellow: simi firm texture. Still simi tart with some sweetness. Good taste. Little tart and others may not like it but I enjoy the tartness almost like a slight citrus flavor. Peel still sticks to fruit a little (not a big deal at all) Full yellow little browning: excellent creamy texture. Excellent sweet taste but not too sweet with a little of the tartness. This is my preferred way to eat them. Excellent taste. Peel still sticks very little. Doesn't effect the taste. Ripe with lots of brown: they go mushy fast at this stage. I don't like this texture. A little sweeter and less of the tartness. Still good but not as good as the less ripe ones. Overall I love them and there is a huge difference in the ripeness. If someone eats an almost ripe one I could see how they may not like the sour tart taste. If you eat one perfectly ripe they are amazing and one of the best bananas I've tried. They have a very unique taste compared to other bananas. How easy they are to grow here means they are for sure a keeper. My wife and all my kids love them and everyone else I've let try them have loved them. They also bruise very easily. At this point they are getting eaten by my family faster than they are ripening while some store cavendish are rotting on the counter. That should tell you something. Excellent banana. Maybe not the sweetest or the best but I love them. I recommend everyone to grow it!! From 3' pup to eating bananas in 6months is a huge bonus and amazing to me.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
Starting my fruiting timing again.
VC, Patupi, Tigua, Florida, AEAE, monthan, Dwarf Nino, Pisang Mas, TC Ladyfinger, Egg banana (direct from Cambodia) hua moa, and Sweetheart. Also have a race between a few others including: Pisang Abu Perak, real Ice Cream, Mysore (PC), Ney Poovan, Tars Goldfinger and Agristarts Goldfinger, and couple others. Flag has waved and they are on their way. All similar sizes and ages. Have both planted transplants and new spring pups! Can't wait to see how it goes! No hidden adgenda! My results will be true and proven. All for knowledge of how short cycle and other bananas grow in zone 8b.

Re: Veinte Cohol Flowering
Good luck with your fruit timing Ty!
I recently put all my bananas in the yard for the season. I will be curious to hear how your short cycle plants turn out - especially the new FloRida one. I have a VC that might fruit this year and I was hoping to have a Patupi fruit as well but my plant kept growing/dying then pupping all winter. It finally has improved now that we have more warmth and sun! VC with leaves 'folded down': Patupi pup finally happy: Regards, Erik G |
