Velutina fruit never got ripe?
The plant is small and only 4' tall. They are growing in pots and when I bought it months ago the nanners were tiny! They are still real hard,2-3" thick and long. but the pink color is kinda gone and they are kind dark and cracked at the ends. So I picked them and brought them inside to see if sitting next to store bought nanners would help them ripen? Age and pot the issue for the fruit? Thanks

Re: Velutina fruit never got ripe?
Normally they ripen on the plant, when they are ripe the skin splits and the fruits peel themselves. If they didn't do that, then there could have been an environmental issue that prevented them from developing properly, but I would not say it is necessarily the fact they are in a pot as I have had them fruit fine in containers before, perhaps it was a stunted plant or was not fed enough?

Re: Velutina fruit never got ripe?
Gabe, I repotted the plant in a bigger pot after I got it. Part compost and part potting soil. I water my nanners several times a day. My thing was some have spilt but the fruit was still so hard and also kinda black in some places like sap. SO I got worried they would rot. Guess I should have waited maybe? Oh well I have tons of plants so next year I will have plenty more nanners and they will grow in the ground instead of pots. We just got a house and move this friday to Wilmington NC and I was told its to late in the year to plant anything in the ground. Which I still never really understood that since if the plant is hardy why would it need time to adjust. Thing is the plant and roots stay very warm in the pots compared to being in the ground no matter how hot it is. Ground breathes were the pot can't release the heat.
Thanks |

Re: Velutina fruit never got ripe?
My M. dasycarpa (velutina) has fruited the past two years. The fruit is initially bright pink but always turns dark and doesn't split open. I usually end up cutting the fruiting stalk down due to the way it looks so maybe I'm not giving it enough time to ripen and split open.

Re: Velutina fruit never got ripe?
Will the fruit ripen if it is cut from the p-stem???????? I don't think there will be enough time to ripen before temps drop.
