Waiting for warmer weather...
Well, I finally took the time to take a few pics of the start of my "little piece of paradise in SE TN", and thought I would link it so you could see it before the warmer weather starts making everything burst with life. Thanks to several of you, you know who you are, I have really increased my list of bananas, ee's, brugs, hardy hibiscus, as well as other tropical plants. I think of this garden as a community effort of the Bananas.org members!!!! You folks are the best and thanks to you, my family will be able to sit back and enjoy a tropical oasis right here in southeast Tennessee. Well, here are a couple of pics and a link to the rest of the pictures I took this morning. I will try and keep everyone updated to its prgress throughout the summer.
Here is the link to the rest of the pictures: randy4ut - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting |

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Cool, I like your "whale tail" lawn.
Starting to heat up here, went from mid sixties, and now in the 80's everyday. Could still snow though, has happened here in june before. Keep us updated on the progress. |

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Thanks Kyle,
They are predicting 80's back toward the end of this week and lows in lower 60s. Hopefully, this will be the last of the cooler weather. I like the cooler weather, but I want my garden to burst out and grow like crazy!!!! |

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Your place just keeps looking better & better.
We are just ending a near record hot spell with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the sixties. The winds, gusting to 50 mph, dried everything out resulting in fire bans and uncontrollable brushfires. My Chamaerops humulis, which I put in full sun against the stucco on our house and protected from the wind, was enduring daytime temperatures that reached 110*F. It's funny how what is normal for you is way too warm for me for this time of year. Allen

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Actually Allen our "normals" for this time of year are only about 5 degrees above what we are currently running, but the past couple of years have been averaging about 10 degrees above what are normals are. So, I guess I can't complain, but I do like it 10 degrees above normal than 5 degrees below normal. Make sense??? A 15 degree difference is a BIG difference when it comes to these plants... BTW, thanks so much for your compliments... Hope you and yours are safe from the fires...

Looks great Randy! Can't wait to see a side by side shot with a late summer pic. Hope your back doesn't feel as bad as mine did after all that work.

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Lord, it was at 102 or so today in north Phoenix, hotter downtown. My bananas on the balcony, even the cute TC ones were smiling and showing no signs of distress. I always thought of 100+ degree weather could mean death for plants, animals, humans etc...but I've been learning so much in the last year I've been in the desert.
Oh and I planted summer vincas and gazanias in containers and they love the heat. I never really liked vincas but now am getting into them as they laugh at Phoenix heat. Zach |

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Great design Randy, I wish I had all that space to play with.
Cool here in Bethesda Maryland too, only the stuff in the greenhouse showing decent growth rates. Just back from Turks & Caicos , hot there, good time had by all. Later Steve

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Thanks Chris, Looking at your yard, you are by no means a slacker!!! Your wife is no slacker either, evident of the pics you posted awhile back of her!!! BTW, Saba has sent out 2 pups that are really showing signs of wanting to take off. This weekend should see temps back into the low 80s, so hopefully, everything is fixing to BURST!!!! Your ornata, heliconia, and several other plants you sent last summer are coming up also.

Re: Waiting for warmer weather...
Looks great! You look so organized. I have a site I am trying to reclaim from neglect so I can put some bananas there.
We in BC had a horribly cold spring though it lately has changed to a pleasant 70 to 80 degrees with overnight lows in the 60's. |
